As the Victorian draughtsman Yog Raj Chitrakar, Chopra haunts bustling market squares, forgotten old buildings, city streets, and museum galleries to make large-scale drawings. Within the performance, daily actions -- washing, eating, drinking, sleeping, dressing, shaving, and observing -- are transformed into ritualistic spectacle. While an ambiguous past collides with a unstable present, Yog Raj Chitrakar reveals the process of documenting what he sees while exploring self-portraiture, autobiography, history, fantasy, and sexuality.

He is pursued throughout the play by his paranoid fantasy: a KGB agent named Vassily Ilianovich Chort. The play, then, is the eccentric whirl of Leonard's entrapment of Chort while the gravelly-voiced Bolshevik is zeroing in for the kill. One actor plays both parts. Ascension: The Journey of John Coltrane - The Harlem School of the Arts
    Through March 02, 2010 -

The Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) and its Visual Arts Department presents Hank Paper's Ascension: The Journey of John Coltrane, Thursday, January 14, 2010 through Tuesday, March 2, 2010. The opening reception takes place Thursday, January 21st from 6pm-8pm in the HSA Gathering Space (G-Space). As with all of HSA's art exhibitions, Ascension is FREE!

In hopes of designation as a national landmark, The Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism provided Hank Paper a grant to photograph the Philadelphia home John Coltrane shared with his cousin, Mary Blair. More than thirty years after Coltrane's death, Mr. Paper began the task of tracking the musician's life from birth in North Carolina, through the beginnings of his career in Philadelphia, to his success in New York City. Ascension takes the viewer on a "photographic jazz evocation of a life." Mr. Paper "wanted his show to be something like a jazz song itself, free-flowing and lyrical, with structure and harmony, and yet with a sense of improvisation, that finally disappears into the air, leaving an ineffable trace of the man and his music."

The Director of Visual Arts, Adarsh Alphons says, "We are delighted to host Mr. Paper's ten-year project about the legendary John Coltrane. The exhibition's photographic journey tells the story of dedication, hard work and perseverance, attributes that the artistic and talented faculty at HSA instill in our students everyday." During Black History Month, Mr. Paper will also host a Saturdays at Noon discussion about his travels documenting Mr. Coltrane's life and the subsequent exhibition on February 6th.

Evoking the life of a legend through photos is no easy task yet, Mr. Paper has done so by "visiting surviving neighbors and neighborhood haunts, empty lots and abandoned buildings, old jazz clubs whose sounds had long ceased, and still-thriving venues whose sounds have forever been changed by the music he brought there." The Harlem School of the Arts is proud to display the talent of Mr. Hank Paper and John Coltrane.

We are easy to get to: Take the A, B, C, D or 1 train to 145th Street or M3 bus to 141st Street. HSA is also on Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Twitter & Blogger.

My Sinatra - A Musical Memoir About Obsessio - The Triad
    Through March 05, 2010 -

Cary Hoffman will take his highly acclaimed show My Sinatra, A Musical Memoir About Obsession, to The Triad uptown. After several successful and critically acclaimed workshops at the Algonquin Theater downtown, the show will make its official Triad debut on Friday, January 15th at 9:00 PM for a four performance limited run.

My Sinatra, A Musical Memoir About Obsession, is the very true story about one man’s love and idolization of Frank Sinatra, one of the world’s greatest performers of all time. The show takes us on a journey that asks us to aspire and believe in the magic and power of entertaining and questions the need many of us have to be somebody else. Co-written by Cary Hoffman and Paul Linke ("...But First Sammy Shore") with musical direction by Tex Arnold, this reality musical, which originally appeared as a special on PBS, specifically follows Hoffman’s real life, that of a Long Island teenager growing up in the 1940s, who obsesses over the legendary Frank Sinatra. After the death of two fathers and the support of his three studio musician uncles (who played with Sinatra), the persona of Sinatra takes on a whole new meaning for Cary throughout his life and career. My Sinatra...is Cary's story, where he bares his soul through personal anecdotes, humor, and some of the songs made famous by Sinatra and shares how his obsession affected his life.

The multi-talented Cary Hoffman has been performing the music of Frank Sinatra for the past eight years all over the world inspiring The New York Times to call him, "Dead on.” In addition to life as a performer, Hoffman is currently one of the Executive Producer of the new TNT series Men of a Certain Age starring Ray Romano and Scott Bakula. Previously Hoffman worked as a successful songwriter/producer including the off-Broadway musical "What's A Nice Country Like Yours, Doing in a State Like This" (starring Martin Short and Betty Buckley), two top twenty Country hits and some of the most well known jingles. As a personal manager, Cary discovered the great R&B crooner Luther Vandross and also manages Mike Royce (co-created Men of a Certain Age), Tom Hertz (Creator of Rules of Engagement on CBS). Cary was also the owner of Stand-Up NY Comedy Club, a landmark club on the Upper West Side for the past 22 years. My Sinatra, A Musical Memoir About Obsession plays at The Triad Theater, 158 West 72 Street. Friday, January 15th 9pm, Tuesday, January 26th 7pm, Saturday, February 13th 7pm, Friday, March 5th 9pm. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased by contacting Smarttix at 212 868-4444 or www.smarttix.com. The Triad Theater has a two-drink minimum and is a cash-only venue. Thomas Chambers (1808-1869): American Marine and Landscape Painter - American Folk Art Museum
    Through March 07, 2010 -

Obscure in his own lifetime, Thomas Chambers found fame in the twentieth century with the discovery of The "Constitution" and the "Guerriere," a rare signed painting of his that unlocked the identity of the artist behind a singularly flamboyant group of mid-nineteenth-century American marine and landscape paintings. Chambers's expressive style and bold decorative sensibility appealed to avant-garde taste, and he was hailed as a spunky native original, "America's first modern." Although almost nothing was known about his life, his work rapidly earned a place in the growing collections and anthologies of American folk art. As more of Chambers's work came to light, a spare life story was constructed from census records, city directories, and a handful of dated paintings that document a career in the United States between 1832 and 1865. Widely recognized but little studied in the last fifty years, the artist receives here the first survey of his work since his modern debut in New York in 1942.

    Through March 07, 2010 -

Legacy: The Preservation of Wilderness in New York City Parks presents the work of photographer Joel Meyerowitz, who has spent more than three years recording wild places in New York City's parks. Located in all five boroughs, these escapes to the woodlands, streams, waterfronts, marshes, and beaches are among the city's greatest assets, yet they are hidden in plain sight. These wild areas, which have been left or returned to their natural state through the city's "Forever Wild" initiative, include the craggy highlands of Manhattan, the sea-facing marshes of Brooklyn, the rocky, Maine-like coastline of the Bronx, and the nearly impenetrable forests of Queens and Staten Island. Through his photographs, Meyerowitz transports the viewer into the heart of a lush wilderness, while portraying pockets of nature as an inextricable part of city life today.
