Description: Created by Bernard D. Kennedy, with music by Verdi, Gounod, Massenet and others. Mr. Kennedy has adapted the gripping story of the martyrdom of Thomas Becket to the opera stage. Becket was the close friend of King Henry II, who later tapped him to be the Archbishop of Canterbury in an effort to put the church under the control of the crown. Becket?s faithfulness to the church created the climate responsible for his ultimate death. Mr. Kennedy careful selected each aria and chorus from operas like Don Carlo, Faust, Romeo and Juliet and others, then wrote the English text to portray the power, the jealousy, the struggle between church and state, and the ultimate martyrdom of Becket on the altar of Canterbury Cathedral.
