Description: Design Wars Competition Features students from SUNY Westchester Community College, Westchester Fashion Academy for Children, and local high school seniors. "Design Wars," a fierce design competition featuring students in and around Westchester County, will jump-start the second day of "Simon Fashion Now," presented by White Plains Hospital, a dynamic series of energetic fashion shows and interactive entertainment at The Westchester, April 12-13. A total of 10 student designers from SUNY Westchester Community College and Westchester Fashion Academy for Children have been paired with 10 high school seniors involved with Operation PROM and Her Honor Mentoring Program to serve as models. The couture looks featured on the catwalk during "Design Wars" will be refurbished dresses and gowns donated by Operation PROM, and ultimately worn by the student models at their high school proms later this spring. At 12pm on Saturday, April 13, the competitors will vie for top honors in this inspired version of runway reality. News 12 Westchester Anchor, Tara Rosenblum, will serve as event emcee, and the fashions will be judged by a distinguished panel, with a top winner and runner-up declared from each fashion program. Each top winning designer will receive a $300 Simon Giftcard, with each runner-up receiving a $100 Simon Giftcard, exposure on The Westchester's "Simon Fashion Now" runway, and a real-life experience to take on their career path. Shoppers are encouraged to be front and center as the students and models take the stage in Nordstrom Court. "We are thrilled to once again provide the incredibly talented students at SUNY Westchester Community College and the Westchester Fashion Academy for Children with the opportunity to showcase their exceptional creations on the 'Simon Fashion Now' stage," said Paula Kelliher, area director of mall marketing for The Westchester. "I can?t wait to see the final looks that will transform these dresses and gowns into custom designs that will be revealed on the runway by the beautiful young women who will then wear them to their high school proms." Immediately following "Design Wars," "Simon Fashion Now" continues on Saturday, April 13, with an afternoon fashion extravaganza. High-energy runway fashion shows will take the stage at 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm. The shows will introduce spring looks from Nordstrom, Ann Taylor, Eileen Fisher, GAP/Baby GAP, Lilly Pulitzer, LOFT, The North Face, Tommy Bahama, and more. At 1:30pm, guests can view the latest footwear styles during a special shoe trend show. At 2:30pm, attendees can participate in "Ready, Set, Style!," an interactive styling competition that allows audience members to compete for a chance to win a Simon Giftcard. In addition, every hour between 12-3pm, guests can register to win fabulous prizes from the mall's premier retailers during the Runway Giveaway. During "Simon Fashion Now," guests can also participate in fundraising elements to benefit Operation PROM and the Junior League of Central Westchester. Operation Prom was originally established in 2005 to provide free prom dresses and tuxedo rentals to needy students. Since then, it has expanded to include collecting and distributing clothing and school supplies to students who are sick, homeless, or living in shelters and do not have family to assist them. The Junior League of Central Westchester is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
