Description: This concert celebrates the extraordinary life and career of composer/lyricist Jerry Herman, who is primarily known as the writer of snappy, up-tempo show tunes like "Hello, Dolly" and "Mame." This concert, which honors Herman's 80th birthday and 50-year career, will demonstrate that he is a uniquely versatile and gifted composer and lyricist who may be underrated because he makes it look so easy. The recipient of the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre, Herman is one of only two composers/lyricists to have three musicals run more than 1,500 consecutive performances on Broadway. The concert will feature some of Herman's early, lesser-known gems (including a duet he wrote, uncredited, for the musical "Ben Franklin In Paris") and will celebrate three of his lesser-known shows: "Mack and Mabel" (his personal favorite score); "The Grand Tour"; and "Dear World," the 1969 musical based on The Madwoman of Chaillot that contains some of his most moving and sophisticated songs.
