Description: At the vanguard of a new progressive style, The New Deal has become a live touring phenomenon, blending electronic music with live improvisation to create and develop actual songs and themes in performance. Consisting of Dan Kurtz on bass, Darren Shearer on drums and beatboxing, and Jamie Shields on keyboard, the group has been both a pioneer of the "livetronica" sound and a mainstay in both the electronica and jamband scenes for over eight years. The band's music, an organic mix of house rhythms, burbling synthesizers, and melodically repetitive bass parts, is almost entirely improvised, though many songs have crystallized from jam sessions and worked their way into the band's repertoire. The New Deal has appeared at numerous festivals, including Bonnaroo, Langerado, Jazz Fest New Orleans, the Coachella Festival, Street Scene in San Diego, Berkfest, Gathering of the Vibes, Camp Bisco, and the Detroit Electronic Music Festival. Headlining over 400 shows in the last four years, the trio inspires audiences of all kinds, from packed dance clubs across North America to spellbound receptions during opening tours with Herbie Hancock and Page McConnell from Phish. The band's discography includes a self-titled release in 2001, Please Be Seated (2003), Gone Gone Gone (2003), and several live albums, the most recent of which is Live:Toronto 7.16.2009.
