Kids' State Dinner, an NFL Run, Turtle Toddlers, and How to Re-create Summer Camp at Home

Earlier this week, the White House hosted its first-ever kids' State Dinner, where guests (ages 8-12) submitted lunch recipes as part of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge. For parents, packing a healthy school lunch is also a challenge, but with these tips from a registered dietician, packing a budget- and eco-friendly lunch that your kids will love becomes easy.
To help keep a healthful lifestyle, head to Whole Foods for a scavenger hunt and learn more tips for quick and healthy lunches, and sign up for next weekend's NFL Play 60 Fun Run where pro athletes will cheer kids on along the 4-mile course. Nearby, see other pro athletes at the U.S. Open Qualifying Tournament for free, and though the Arthur Ashe Kids' Day is sold out, kids can still watch pros practice and participate in fun activities and games on the grounds. Discover another type of sport at the Suburbia Roller Derby.
Spend more time outdoors and travel the world right from your neighborhood's backyard. Head to Passport Friday to learn about Puerto Rico through live dance performances and concerts, or journey into the homes of people from Mongolia, Malaysia, and Fiji at Your House, My House. Learn about the Scottish at a Long Island Festival featuring bagpipes, step dancing, caber toss (a traditional game that involves tossing a large wooden pole), and more. Then, transport to the West Indies as you listen to a steel drum band at a Celebration of Caribbean Carnival.
Visit NY's second largest county fair, Dutchess County Fair, a six-day event featuring animals, plants, farm products, carnival rides, crafts, and daily and nightly entertainment.
Music and Shows: Improvise on African, Latin, and Caribbean rhythms on traditional drums, discover quirky songs, animation, and great storytelling of Key Wilde and Mr. Clarke, or get older kids spooked at Stories of Strange Things, a showcase of theatrical tricks and puppetry. See the Tales of Neverland as Peter and friends try to rescue Tinkerbell from wicked Captain Hook. Plus learn the history of Brooklyn with a Revolutionary War reenactment at the free Battle of Brooklyn's 236th anniversary.
All Hands on Deck: Create your own picture book on subway travel, or use colorful paper bags to make 3-D fish that "swim" through the air. Be one of the first to welcome baby turtles into the world at Turtle Hatch Day, or learn all about these creatures at It's Turtle Time. Also discover exotic African species like the air-breathing lungfish and electric catfish. Get the answers to questions like what bees do in their honeybee hive, how they find flowers, and other fun facts.
