July 4 is one of those annual events that creeps up on us each year and prompts us to ask “Is it that time again already?!” Relax and enjoy these local celebrations before back-to-school clothes take over the stores. Check out our list of four local celebrations.
Model Rocket Launch
Viola (Weldler) Park, West Maple Road, Monsey
Maybe you made model rockets as a kid. Maybe they’re on your list of things to do with your kids. Watch the Challenger Center Rocket Club members launch their model rockets or bring your own at a Model Rocket Launch on July 6. Rockets and motors will be available for purchase at the launch site. Rain date is July 20.
Rockland Boulders Games

Take your kids out to the ballpark without the long drives to Queens or the Bronx and the cries of "Are we there yet?!" The Rockland Boulders play right here in Pomona at a beautiful new stadium that includes a playground for restless young fans. Search our full calendar of events for details on games and special promotions, including your chance to play catch on the field and run the bases after the game (After games on July 14 and 28, kids ages 14 and younger can run the bases on the field.)
Sail the Hudson on the A.J. Meerwald
Alpine Boat Basin, Alpine, NJ
The A.J. Meerwald, New Jersey’s official Tall Ship, sets sail July 18-21 with a series of themed cruises focusing on New Jersey’s history, art, music, and nature. Flip to those dates in this month’s full calendar of events for sailing times and special events, including hands-on learning opportunities for kids ages 5-12 and their parents. These special sailings are held in conjunction with the Tenafly Nature Center.
Outdoor Summer Concerts
Clarkstown, Congers, Haverstraw, Stony Point, Valley Cottage, West Nyack
Throughout July and August
Pull up a beach chair and pack a picnic dinner for outdoor concerts in Rockland’s parks. Many towns in the area host free, weekly shows featuring local talent (see The Kootz, pictured, perform July 18 in Haverstraw).
