Looking for fun and low-cost things to do with your kids in Rockland County this September? Our list includes fall fairs and festivals, outdoor activities, and more family activities in Bear Mountain, Cornwall, Nyack, Pomona, and nearby in New Jersey.
Levity Live, West Nyack
Once a month, Levity Live invites kids and their parents to laugh with each other—rather than at each other—when the comedy club hosts a Family-Friendly Comedy Brunch. These special events feature nationally touring, professional comedians from such famous comedy outlets as Comedy Central, Showtime, and HBO.
Main Street and Broadway, Nyack
Kids can get in on the art action when Nyack’s business and creative communities team up to host First Fridays each month through the end of the year. Local artists team up with 40 village venues for an evening of street performances, interactive art projects, and artwork galore. Pick up a map at participating venues and join in the fun. FREE!
JCC Rockland, West Nyack
Touch a Truck is a bit of a misnomer for these popular events that let kids of all ages check out police cars, farm equipment, fire trucks, and more. Jewish Federation of Rockland hosts a local meet-and-greet for community vehicles on Sept. 8. Families with children who have special needs or those with sensory issues are invited for a “beep-free hour” 10-11am. Children's performer Matty Roxx will perform at 1pm.
Tenafly Nature Center, Tenafly, NJ
Sundays in September (except Sept. 1)
Nothing says “fall” in the Hudson Valley like apples. We pick ‘em, we cook ‘em, and we crush ‘em. On Sept. 8 and 22, the Tenafly Nature Center invites families to help make apple cider and learn about the history of apple cultivation and cider-making. The nature center will provide the apples but more apples mean more cider, so feel free to bring three or more apples per person. Rain or shine. Registration required. No strollers.
Hudson Highlands Nature Museum Outdoor Discovery Center, Cornwall
The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum puts a new twist on scavenger hunts when it hosts a Nature Photoscavenger Hunt on Sept. 22. This special event combines fall foliage, photography, and fun. 10am. $7; $5 children.
Bear Mountain, Nyack, Pomona, and beyond
Even if you don’t agree that, as the old Staples commercial insisted, it’s the “most wonderful time of the year,” one thing you’ve got to give fall is its bounty of delicious tastes, visual beauty, and outdoor fun. The air is crisp, the sky seems impossibly blue, and everywhere you go, the atmosphere is alive with possibility. So load the family into the car for a short drive to one (or all!) of these delightful local fall festivals.
