Description: In celebration of the Tulip Festival, live models and a children's art activity will be available on the Museum terrace. Children are invited to design their own "Art Car" and artists of all ages can practice their figure drawing skills, sketching in response to a series of poses. Use the museum's drawing supplies or bring your own. In inclement weather, activities will be located in the galleries. Charcoal is not permitted in the Museum, but all other drawing supplies will be available.
Venue Description: Established in 1920, the Heckscher Museum of Art houses more than 2,100 pieces spanning 500 years of art, with an emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. With collections ranging from American and European modernism to contemporary photography, the museum has something for all aesthetic tastes. One of its oldest works is Lucas Cranach's "Virgin, Child, St. John the Baptist and Angels," dating from 1534. Across Time and Place: Treasures from a Permanent Collection rotates highlighted pieces from the permanent collection. Through the museum's popular exhibition, Long Island's Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher, high school visual art students can compete each spring to have their work publicly displayed. It is the only juried exhibition in Long Island that allows students to show their work in a museum. Family-friendly public programs at the museum include concerts, lectures, puppet shows, book groups, and hands-on activities. School discovery programs are grade-appropriate and designed to enrich a school's curriculum by exploring art and creativity.
