Venue Description: As one of Long Island's leading privately supported museums, the Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriages houses more than 40,000 pieces from the 1700s to the present. Not only does the museum feature a variety of American art and artifacts from everyday life, but it also displays nearly 200 historic carriages. The museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate, which gives them greater access to its collections and educational resources.
Over the past year, the museum's school programs, which run September through June, served more than 12,000 children from 59 school districts. The whole family can enjoy the museum's newest exhibitions, at the Dorothy and Ward Melville Carriage House and the Margaret Melville Blackwell History Museum. Frequent events and programs, such as Senior Tuesday, Drawing and Painting the Natural Environment, and Sound of Summer give people of all ages an opportunity to get involved in the world of art. Also check out the art museum and the gardens and historic structures throughout the property.
The museum is open Thursday-Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 12-5pm and closed Monday-Wednesday. They are open Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day and closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Easter Sunday.
Admission for adults are $9, seniors 62 and older are $7, and ages 6-17 or college students with ID are $4. Children younger than 6 are free. Admission is $1 every Thursday through Labor Day. All galleries are wheelchair accessible and wheelchairs are available on a first-come first-served basis.
