Looking for fun and affordable things to do with your kids this March in Suffolk County, Long Island? We've got details on the top family events happening this month, including special movie screenings, kid-friendly theater, a sneak peak at the circus, and more.
Begins March 3
Huff and Puff
The Three Little Pigs or Home is Where you Hold Your Heart: A Play in Verse and Verses is an original musical with a long title and a big heart. While it is based on the familiar story, this version playing at Theatre Three is told completely in song and verse and its message focuses on race relations and the homeless.
Spread Your Wings
What happens when a little boy hunts and traps butterflies only to find out his net is too full? Find out when author Michelle Zimmerman reads from her book, Can’t Catch a Butterfly at the Ward Mellville Heritage Organization. After the story, children enjoy a cup of cocoa and make a craft.
Special Movies for Special Kids
AMC theaters across the country have dedicated one day each month to creating a comfortable environment in which audience members with autism and/or sensory disorders can watch a current movie. The lights stay up in the theater, the sound is turned down, and audience members are invited to get up and dance, walk, shout, or sing. This month’s film is Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax. Two theaters in Suffolk County offer sensory-friendly screenings: AMC Lowes Theater Stonybrook 17 and AMC Loews Shore 8.
Sneak Peek at the Circus
The circus is coming to town (to the Nassau Coliseum, to be exact, from March 21-26), but first it’s making a stop at the Long Island Children’s Museum. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus gives a preview of the newest version of its “greatest show on earth,” featuring a contingent of clowns that will entertain the circus fans in all of us.
Nothing goes down easier on a Sunday morning than breakfast made with your own two hands: Kids can make their own Belgian waffles during the Children’s Museum of the East End’s Waffle Day.
Sundays in March
Spring is the perfect time to take a pony ride. Introduce your child to horseback riding as they enjoy a trip on the scenic trails at Greenlawn Equestrian Center. Bring carrots from home to treat the horses or purchase treats at the center.
Celebrate St. Patrick's Day
Dance a jig, hunt for a pot of gold, discover the pleasures of Irish music and yes…spray your hair green. These are just some of your options for a fun, and hopefully lucky, St Patrick's Day celebration.
