Description: Gangs of swashbuckling pirates take over Philipsburg Manor. Musical pirates, belly dancers, and scallywags of all sorts roam the grounds, looking to pick a pocket or two. Kids can take part in the Pieces of Eight Treasure Hunt, wiggle their way into a pirate shipwreck, trade barbs with a clever, talkative parrot, learn to speak and act like a bloody pirate, view captured mermaids, wander through a museum of oddities, get scarred for life (well, for a day at least) at Lady Molly Roger's Tattoo Shoppe, test their cannon shot capabilities, help take out the British in Davy Jones' Revenge, and seize some booty in the Thieves Market. Venue Description: Visit Philipsburg Manor, where in the 1700s, the Philipsburg family of Anglo-Dutch merchants in the upheld a farming, mining, and trading center with the help of 23 enslaved Africans. You may tour the gardens and many of the historic houses on your own, but guided tours are available throughout the day.
Wander among cows, sheep, chickens, and oxen alongside your outfitted tour guide and witness all the hard work that went into running such a colossal complex. The story of Caesar, an enslaved African miller, will enable you to explore and understand the working gristmill that is on the grounds. Next you can learn the skills of a riverboat pilot through the stories of the slave Diamond. When you enter the 300-year-old manor house, you will tour the dairy, kitchens, bedchambers, warehouse rooms, and parlor.
Also learn the art of textile production at the Activity Center and take a peek into the medicinal practices of the time. Try your hand in shelling beans, making flax into linen, and producing a tray of ship biscuits. Then, enter the New World Dutch barn and thresh some wheat, or help groom the oxen.
