Lyndhurst Family Fun Day - Lyndhurst
Add to Calendar 27-04-2013 27-04-2013 15 Lyndhurst Family Fun Day Educational and fun! Kids of All Ages Can Exhibit Their LEGO creations in a gilded age castle! For the past nine years, Westchester families have participated in the Lyndhurst Family Fun Day. The two-day party allows creative and inquisitive kids to exhibit their LEGO creations in the art and antique-filled rooms of Lyndhurst, a National Historic Landmark and one of the greatest houses of 19th-century America. "Lyndhurst Family Fun Day allows us to develop a future generation of kids that will understand the connection between creativity and great architecture. By allowing budding artists to display their LEGO creations in rooms filled with priceless art and antiques, we help create an awareness of aesthetics in the young," noted Howard Zar, executive director at Lyndhurst. Parents like the event as there is no judging to participate. Even the smallest or least nimble children can gain confidence by having their creations exhibited in beautiful period rooms. It is not uncommon to see exhibitors bringing their families and friends, and the pride as they show off their exhibited work is evident. Exhibitors are provided a badge and four free passes to the show. Any child who signs up by April 5th at lyndhurst.org/lego, and brings his or her creation to Lyndhurst on Saturday or Sunday, April 21st and 22nd between 1pm and 3pm, is allowed to exhibit in the mansion. The event is also great fun for those who don't exhibit, as the grounds are full of play and exhibition opportunities by local LEGO clubs and vendors. Young kids enjoy the LEGO trainscape built by members of I LUG New York. The brand new LEGOLAND Discovery Center will offer the chance to build with master builder Mike T and play in the LEGO play pit. The staff of BRICK KIDS will help kids build a castle or construct and race wacky cars. Older kids from area high schools will display their robotics creations. Numerous food, toy, and vintage or new LEGO vendors will be on hand to complete the day. As always, kids can enter a raffle to win free LEGO prizes and passes to the new LEGOLAND Discovery Center. Sponsorship for this event has been provided by ARTSWestchester and other area businesses. Kids of all ages are invited to exhibit their LEGO creations in the historic Lyndhurst mansion. Sculptures must be created in advance. Deadline to register as an exhibitor is April 5, 2013. Venue Description: Lyndhurst, a historic site of the National Trust, is a must-see for those interested in art and architecture from the past. This 67-acre estate is one of the great domestic landmarks in America and filled with 19th-century architecture, arts, and landscape design. It is located in Tarrytown, not far from Washington Irving's Sunnyside, and you can detect the historic and aesthetic traits that these two venues share. Walk the Croton Aqueduct Trail from Lyndhurst to West Sunnyside Lane (Lyndhurst and Sunnyside will also be linked by a pathway along the riverfront soon) and enjoy kayaking on the river in the warm summer months.

Lyndhurst was originally designed in 1838 in the Gothic Revival style by Alexander Jackson Davis, who also designed most of the furniture and later doubled the size of the estate. Jay Gould, the prototypical robber baron, purchased the property in 1880, added a greenhouse in the Gothic style, and renamed it Lyndhurst. He hired the Herter Brothers to redecorate and they added many paintings that are still present today. Ferdinand Mangold is responsible for the "garden-esque" landscape, which most notably features spectacular specimen trees.
