Discovery Sunday & Opening of the New Visitor Center at John Jay Homestead - John Jay Homestead
Add to Calendar 19-05-2013 19-05-2013 15 Discovery Sunday & Opening of the New Visitor Center at John Jay Homestead The public is invited to "Discovery Sunday," an open house event at the John Jay Homestead. The new Visitor Center will be open, featuring state-of-the-art computer stations with interactive educational components, computerized interactive displays, a viewing area for a video about John Jay and the site, children's discovery boxes, and a gift shop. Discovery Centers will simultaneously open in five other buildings: the Main Barn, the Schoolhouse, the Playhouse, the Potting Shed, and in the summer kitchen in the John Jay house. Also in the historic house, a new exhibit, "Reflections on our Past: A Viewer Response Exhibit," will present dozens of rarely seen artifacts from the Homestead's historic collection, with a range of responses from members of the community. Admission to the property, the Visitor Center, the Discovery Centers, and the outbuildings is, as always, free. On this Sunday, admission to the historic main house and gallery will also be free. The Friends of John Jay Homestead have completed the exterior restoration of the Carriage Barn, originally built in 1801, and its interior has been rehabilitated as a space that will welcome visitors, provide orientation to the historic site, and support special exhibits and education programs. The new Education and Visitor Center will be operated and maintained by New York State site staff and volunteers. The handsome barn has been beautifully restored using 90% of the original materials, under the direction of site architects Jan Hird Pokorney of New York City. The Visitor Center is expected to accommodate over 50,000 annual site visitors in its first year of operation, and that number is expected to grow. John Jay Homestead State Historic Site is one of only a few historic homes in this country once owned by a Founding Father, and open to the public. Friends of John Jay Homestead is a non-profit, educational organization founded in 1977 by local residents. It is New York State's day-to-day partner in providing volunteer assistance and critical funding for the preservation, restoration, and interpretation of John Jay Homestead State Historic Site, and for its educational programs.
