Description: Taconic Opera ends its 15th consecutive season by taking Donizetti's famous opera, "Daughter of the Regiment" ("La Fille du Regiment") into the future. The hilarious comedy by the composer of "Don Pasquale" and "Elixir of Love" is known throughout the world as the opera that put Pavarotti on the map as the "King of the High C's." In a creative twist, the company is setting the opera in the distant future. "The story is exactly the same," says Director Dan Montez. "I don’t believe in sacrificing story for setting." Montez explains that some operas, like "Daughter," can work in many time periods. "I think it is actually even funnier in the future."
For those familiar with opera, this delightful comedy is always a crowd pleaser. For those who've never been to an opera, it's a wonderful way to get that first all-important exposure. Between the music and the staging, it offers pure joy and fun. The story centers around a girl who, found abandoned and alone as a baby, was raised lovingly by a regiment of soldiers. At the stage of her life when she is emerging into womanhood and is a little rough around the edges from her lack of exposure to female behaviors, it is discovered that she is the daughter of aristocrats and must leave her beloved life with the regiment and learn how to fit into high society as a "lady." "There are things we are doing with this opera that no one has ever tried before in an opera," says Montez. "I don’t want to ruin any surprises, but there will be some hilarious moments." The performances will be sung in French with English dialogue. English supertitles (translations above the stage) will enhance understanding and enjoyment.
Taconic Opera, winner of the 2012 ArtsWestchester Arts Organization of the Year Award, has built a reputation on presenting high-quality, engaging productions that appeal to a wide range of ages. For those who cannot afford a trip to the Big Apple and New York City prices, and even for those who can, it is wonderful to know that anyone can enjoy great opera without leaving, or by simply traveling to Westchester County.
Significant reductions in ticket prices are available for seniors, and students can attend for as little as $15. Tickets can be purchased online at taconicopera.org, or by calling the toll-free number 1-855-88-OPERA (1-855-886-7372).
