The International School of Brooklyn (ISB), NYC’s only French/Spanish language-immersion school following the International Baccalaureate curriculum, is moving to a bigger space and adding first grade in September.
The school, which opened in September 2005 with nursery and pre-Kindergarten classes, will move to 237 Park Place, in Prospect Heights. The new building, which formerly housed a Head Start program, will have four classrooms, an art room, a library, a multi-purpose room, and an outdoor play space. The building also gives the school space to grow even further; a two-phase capital campaign includes raising money to add two additional classrooms, expected to open in September, 2008.
ISB will also nearly double its student population for the 2007 school year, going from 33 to 60 children; there are about the same number of kids in the Spanish and French tracks. In addition to the school programs, ISB offers Language Immersion Toddler Playgroups, Summer Camp and After School programs. The after school program serves kids from 3 years old to third grade; camp is for 3- to 6-year-olds.
The school also offers bilingual playgroups at satellite locations. There is Spanish on Tuesdays and French on Wednesdays at Language and Laughter Studio in Cobble Hill, and Spanish on Wednesdays and French on Thursdays at Lucky Lotus Yoga in Fort Greene. Community events include French/Spanish book fairs, readings, and children’s film screenings.
ISB, accredited by the New York State Board of Education, has the ultimate goal of growing to accommodate preschool through 12th grade. For more information, go to www.isbrooklyn.org.
