Buckley Third Graders Attend Writers Workshop at Columbia Teachers College

On September 25, Buckley Country Day School’s third graders were off to college! As part of Buckley’s affiliation with Columbia University Teachers College, third grade students were invited to attend a workshop with Newbery Award winning author, Jack Gantos.

Gantos has written several series’ of books for children and books on children’s writing. He is a renowned authority on writers notebooks. Gantos helped the students embrace their writers notebooks and to regard writing the true stories of their lives as fantastically fun work.

“I was thrilled that our third graders were able to take advantage of this incredible opportunity to work with such an inspirational writer and author,” said Elizabeth Lyons, Buckey’s head of lower school.

The third graders summed up their experience in their writers notebooks:

“At first I thought that Jack Gantos was just a normal man but I listened to his stories and now all I can say about Jack is that he is smart and he can think of a story in a snap.”

“On the bus ride home, I looked out the window and I did not say a word the whole trip back to school. Mr. Gantos inspired me to write more often and to believe in myself and in my stories.”
