Volunteer Events on 9/11: Helping Homeless Americans

Get your kids involved in a Family-to-Family sponsored volunteer project on September 11 to help homeless Americans in your community.

On September 11, at your workplace or in your home, invite family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors to participate in the “Help the Homeless Living in Your Area” event. Participants pack bags, backpacks, and soft suitcases with toiletries like toothpaste, shampoo, and shaving cream to be donated to a local family.*

Volunteers may choose to participate in the “Birthdays in a Box” event that focuses on creating birthday kits for families unable to afford hosting a party for their child. These kits will consist of a shoebox filled with birthday cake mix, frosting, a small gift for a child, and, possibly, a goody bag.*

Family-to-Family is a hunger relief organization that matches each of its donors  with a specific family living in poverty. This direct connection between donor and recipient offers both an experience of giving that becomes more hands-on and personal. Each program donor sponsors “their” family with a monthly donation that is used by Family-to-Family to purchase groceries that cover the last week of each month when food stamps often run out.

Since its founding in 2002, Family-to-Family has provided over 1.3 million meals to impoverished families in 21 U.S. communities.
