Natural Beauty in 3-D
Venture across floating ice, travel with a herd of caribou, plunge into an ethereal underwater world with walruses, and gaze across snow-bound peaks and a vast expanse of the Arctic Ocean in To The Arctic, the latest IMAX adventure. This 3-D film tells the story of a mother polar bear’s determination to keep her cubs alive in the face of natural predators and a rapidly changing climate.
Of Books and Beasts
The Hudson Valley Visiting Pet Program will host a Reading Education Assistance Dogs training session for individuals who wish to work with their animals to help children learn to read. Librarians, teachers, and school administrative staff who want to learn more about the program and how it could enhance the reading curriculum in their libraries or schools are also encouraged to attend. This workshop is for humans only; training for pets is done separately (the program accepts dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and even horses).
The folks who bring us Milk and Cookies, the cultural arts series for children, have found something truly cool for kids and their parents: Lazer Vaudeville. The show features black light juggling, lasers, magic, acrobatics, slapstick comedy, and dance. The show stars Carter Brown, master of hoop-rolling and rope-spinning; Cindy Marvell, winner of the International Juggling Association Championships; and Jeff Taub, a former Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus clown. Milk and cookies will, of course, be served after the show.
Watch the Bergen County Zoo’s sheep get their spring shave-downs and celebrate Earth Day with the animals at the zoo’s Fifth Annual Party for the Planet.
Tune in to Fun
The Green Meadow Waldorf School kicks off Screen-Free Week with an afternoon of activities aimed at inspiring families to have fun without the aid of electronic entertainment and media. Stop by for music, games, crafts, food, a nature walk, and more. The April 28 event, a national initiative of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, is co-sponsored by Green Meadow Waldorf School and the Nature Place Day Camp.
Clean Up Your Community
In celebration of Earth Day, Keep Rockland Beautiful will host six kid-friendly community cleanups on several days this month.
