On the Blogroll: Mommy Moi

The NYMetroParents blogroll features the best blogs in the parenting world, from New York and beyond. Here’s a closer look at why we love these mom bloggers and dad bloggers and how they’re shaping the web for parenting today.

Blogging From: New York, New York

Brooke Lea Foster, an author and journalist, had a mission. When her son turned 1, she realized she had lost all aspects of her own identity that weren’t tied to being a mom. “I spend so much time loving Harper that I’ve lost track of who I am besides that,” she writes under her “About Me” section. Her mission: to find Brooke again.

To help her in her search, she started Mommy Moi, a site that chronicles the discoveries she made as a new mother. And although Foster no longer updates Mommy Moi (concerns about how her child would feel 5, 10, 20 or more years after finding out he was documented all his life), her writing inspires. Her concise posts (rarely more than 250 words), include loads of pictures and videos of her son as she focuses on the happy stories and moments in their lives. One of her often-used tags is “kids don’t come with a manual”—for example, she uses this to convey how when her son began to use the word, “please,” her encouragement led to him saying it for everything instead of nouns.
