New Places, New Programs for Kids in Brooklyn – May 2010

Check out these new additions to Brooklyn catering to children and families.

Brooklyn Free School; children putting on a playNew to Clinton Hill

The Brooklyn Free School (BFS), the only democratic school in New York City, moved in January from Park Slope to Clinton Hill. The school’s new residence is a five-story, 7,000-square-foot brownstone building at 372 Clinton Avenue. “It’s a great area for us, and we’re excited to be here,” says Alan Berger, the school’s director, adding that the new, bigger space gives BFS the ability to grow and add new programs. After school and summer programs are currently in the works, he says.

Now in its sixth year, BFS is a private school for children ages 4-18. Average enrollment is about 60 students of multi-ethnic backgrounds. As a democratic school, BFS gives everyone, including its students, an equal vote on decisions in running the school. There are no mandated curriculum, tests, homework, or report cards, and while there are advisory groups for different age ranges, students are generally not separated into grade levels. “Students decide what areas they’d like to pursue,” Berger explains. “They’re empowered to pursue their own interests and to take responsibility for their own education.”

Located at 372 Clinton Avenue, Clinton Hill. For more information: 718-499-2707 or www.brooklynfreeschool.org.

First-Rate Smiles in a Flash

In March, Hanson Place Orthodontics began offering a new treatment called SureSmile®, which cuts orthodontic treatment time by almost 40 percent compared to traditional braces. This state-of-the-art treatment uses robotic technology and 3-D imaging to create custom-made archwires for each individual patient, giving the doctor more control over the treatment plan. The Shape Memory alloy wires used in the SureSmile® design are more effective than the archwires used in conventional braces, allowing for shorter treatment, less visits to the office, and enhanced patient comfort.

For the past 10 years, Dr. Yakov Eisenberger and associates at Hanson Place Orthodontics have offered advanced orthodontic treatment for all ages. In addition to SureSmile®, the practice offers several other treatment options, including Invisalign®. While providing optimal oral health, the practice also strives to promote happiness, self-esteem, and comfort in its patients.

Dr. Eisenberger, who has been in practice since 1995, received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from New York University College of Dentistry and completed an orthodontic residency at Temple University, where he also received his Orthodontic Certificate and Master’s in Dentistry.
