New in Manhattan – Speech Zone & Skateboarding Camp

2 new places have landed on the scene in NYC for kids! One is a series of social group classes for children with special needs, the other is a camp made for skaters...

Group Communication

Does your child have difficulties with social interaction? A new series of social group classes at the pediatric speech therapy center, Speech Zone, can help. Children are grouped by age and what skills need work. Led by speech and language therapists certified/trained in PROMPT, the groups work with children diagnosed with autism, PDD, and Asperger, helping them with articulation, language comprehension, expressive communication, and reading. The classes include circle time, where children take turns getting to know one another, and themed activities, including arts and crafts and cooking, that incorporate interaction. While making a pizza or baking cookies, children read directions aloud, ask to pass ingredients, and discuss what toppings they would like. Each group session is one hour and costs $120. The classes
are offered at Speech Zone’s west side location at 2112 Broadway. For more information, call 212-799-1750.

Skateboard with Friends

Having witnessed the popularity of its after-school skateboarding program, Friends Seminary has created a weeklong summer Skateboarding Camp for first through eighth graders. Under the instruction of pro skater Drew Kilgore, beginners will learn fundamentals including balance, stance and footwork, basic tricks, and safety. Advanced skaters will hone their skills on the ramps, quarter pipe, grind rails, and boxes on the 3,600-square foot skate park on the enclosed roof on the school’s main building. A complementary indoor training component focuses on core strength and the use of instructional DVDs. Trips to NYC’s most popular skate spots, including Brooklyn Banks, Riverside, and Heliport Skate Park, will take place, as well as surprise sessions with professionals from 5boro and other NYC teams. Helmet, knee and elbow pads, and skateboard required. No experience necessary. June 8-12. Grades 1-3, 10am-12pm, $325. Grades 4-8, 1-4pm, $375. For more info: 212-979-5035 or www.friendsseminary.org.
