Queens Family Outing: MoMA PS1 Hosts Two Fascinating Exhibits

The non-profit, contemporary art museum will host "The Talent Show" and "Sergej Jensen" through the spring. Read on for details on these two experimental exhibits.

David Lamelas, Limit of a Projection I, 1967Artistic Adventures

This winter, MoMA PS1 hosts two fascinating exhibits. The first, titled The Talent Show, explores pop-culture's "attention-seeking" phenomenon, most often seen in reality shows, talent competitions, and social media (think Facebook and Twitter). The exhibit also examines the ways in which worldwide governments have increased their powers of surveillance and what that could mean for society. The show takes an honest look at the need for one's own "15 minutes of fame," as well as our collective need to practice exhibitionism and voyeurism, while taking into account the resulting ethical tensions.

Sergej Jensen, Portrait Dr., 2005

The second show is Sergej Jensen, running through May 2, 2011. This Berlin-born artist creates minimalistic work, using unconventional methods including bleaching, fraying, and sewing to imitate traditional painting. The solo exhibit is Jensen's first in a New York museum.

Originally founded in 1971, MoMA PS1 is one of the oldest nonprofit contemporary art museums in the country. Its ongoing objective is to display experimental art, while exposing audiences to new trends and genres by emerging artists.
