We’re Jammin’Dan Zanes and friends little nut tree album cover

Little Nut Tree is the long-awaited follow-up to the Grammy-winning Catch That Train! from Dan Zanes and Friends. Ever popular in Brooklyn and beyond, Zanes and his crew of collaborators perform throughout the year to fans young and old. “When I started making family music, or 21st century all-ages social music, I wanted to try and create the updated version of the Folkways records I grew up with. They had a homespun mix of old and new songs from a variety of traditions that sounded like they were recorded on someone’s farm,” says Zanes. Our verdict: successful — and highly danceable. And smile-inducing. The guests this time around include singer/violinist/whistler Andrew Bird, West African group the Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars, Zanes’s long time friend Joan Osborne, and more. The sounds run the gamut from reggae-like beats to folksy, funky, and soulful — or, as Zanes himself promises, “groovy.” ($12.52, amazon.com; release date September 27)

Vibrant illustrations of the hungry little title character, tasty leaves, a glowing sun, and butterflies are all happy images recognizable to your kids — the art creates playful prints on bedsheets or delicate appliqués on pillows.
