Kings County Fiber Festival - Old Stone House & Stone Park

Spend the day with natural fiber artists, crocheters, dyers, felters, knitters, quilters, spinners, and weavers in the annual fiber fair. 

The full day event will include a marketplace for independent fiber artists from the tri-state area, demonstrations, an art exhibit and more.

Drag Queen Story Hour - Brooklyn Children's Museum

Join in for this interactive art and storytime program that celebrates the uniqueness of all kids and families. This event happens regularly around the city and features drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores. 

Bridge the Gap for Girls 5K Walk - Cadman Plaza Park
October 12, 2019 - Brooklyn

Did you know that even today, girls are more likely to die from malnutrition, be denied an education, or be forced into child marriage? Save the Children challenges you to do something about it. Walk with us on October 12th for the first Save the Children Bridge Challenge — a fundraiser for girls in need. You'll walk 3.5 miles across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge ending at Cadman Park. Together we can bridge the gap for girls and give them the futures they deserve.

Rolling Thunder's Oktoberfest! - Historic Richmond Town

The Rotary Clubs of Staten Island and Rolling Thunder are once again organizing the Staten Island Oktoberfest. There will be entertainment, vendors, food, and fun. All Proceeds will go to helping Veterans in need. Don’t let the kids stop you from coming out. There are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy, including carnival games, rides, and a bouncy house.

Help the Garden Day - October - Highland Park Children's Garden
October 12, 2019 - Highland Park

Nestled at the far end of Highland Park is a delightful community garden filled with beds of shade trees, flowers, fruits, and herbs.  Join our community gardeners and help us "wind down” while learning some basic such as weeding, composting, pruning, and planting.  

Come dressed in sturdy boots or shoes, long pants, and clothing that can get dirty.  Please bring your own water bottle and snack for this event.  Volunteers younger than18 years old must be accompanied by a chaperone.

Please note: Space is limited. Registration for this event is required by October 10.

PLG Young Readers Book Group - Greenlight Bookstore PLG

Led by Greenlight bookseller Wynne, this young readers book group in Prospect Lefferts Garden is geared toward kids ages 9 to 12, and reads great contemporary and classic chapter books. Parents are welcome (but not required) to attend, and pizza is served. For October, the group discusses Kelly Barnhill’s Newbery Award-winning The Girl Who Drank the Moon. Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the Forest, Xan, is kind. She rescues the children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey. One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. As Luna’s thirteenth birthday approaches, her magic begins to emerge—with dangerous consequences.

Oct 5: A Bilingual Family Concert with Mister G. Ben Gundersheimer (MISTER G) is a Latin GRAMMY Award-winning artist, author, activist, and educator. Hailed as “a bilingual rock star” by the Washington Post, he tours internationally playing everywhere from Lollapalooza and Lincoln Center to climate change rallies on Capitol Hill. His spirited bilingual performances aim to help children see each other across borders and foster cross-cultural connections.

Oct 12: New York International Children's Film Festival: Kid Flicks One. 

Bigger, brighter, bolder—change is in the air in NYICFF Kid Flicks 1, brimming with fun and clever stories of growth and transformation. If you’ve ever been the youngest of the group, you’ll sympathize with the little tadpole who always falls a tad behind in the charming KUAP. Catching up on penmanship is the name of the game if you want to graduate from pencils in the winning doc Pen Licence. Then little ones are in charge and grown-ups get to play when the hilarious Flipped reworks the script. Recommended ages 3-7.

Oct 19: Schoolhouse Rock by Plaza Theatrical Productions. 

"Schoolhouse Rock" A pop culture phenomenon comes to the musical stage in Schoolhouse Rock Live! The Emmy Award-winning 1970s Saturday morning cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math and more through clever, tuneful songs is not only making a small-screen comeback, it's lighting up stages everywhere – from school multi-purpose rooms to university and regional theatres all around the country. Schoolhouse Rock Live! follows Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher who is nervous about his first day of teaching. Smorgasburg - East River State Park

Smorgasburg is the largest weekly open-air food market in America, attracting 20,000-30,000 people to Brooklyn each weekend to eat from 100 local vendors—Saturdays on the Williamsburg waterfront and Sundays in beautiful Prospect Park.

Green Team 2019 - Brooklyn Bridge Park

Green Team provides essential horticultural care to the Park, including planting, mulching, and removing invasive plants. Green Team is a wonderful opportunity to learn about gardening, enjoy nature, and make the Park look its best.

Saturdays, May 25-Oct 26, 2019, 10am to 12pm.

All volunteers must fill out a waiver and bring it to their first volunteer activity in the park. Volunteers 18 years old or younger should submit their waiver signed by a parent or guardian before any activity begins; volunteers 16 years old or younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No experience necessary.
