UPDATED AUGUST 2019: Apple picking makes for a quintessential family weekend getaway or day trip that brings fruitful rewards far after you've left the orchard. Whether your children are  just learning about healthy eating, or whether they're at that age where they're obsessed with getting the perfect Instagram picture, apple picking is an ideal family activity for everyone. Here, we've put together a guide to pick-your-own apple farms on Long Island, many of which include fun fall extras like hay rides, corn mazes, and cider pressing, making these spots perfect for families. Please note: Dates and availability are subject to change. We recommend calling ahead before visiting these farms.

Hayden's Orchard
561 Hulse Landing Road (near Wildwood State Park), Wading River

Pick-your-own nectarines through late September, peaches through end of September, and apples through late October. Call for availability. Open 8am-5pm daily.

Lewin Farms
812 Sound Ave., Calverton

Apple picking late August through October, 9am-4:30pm. Pumpkin picking late September through October. Farm open Monday-Sunday (except Tuesday), 9am-5pm. Cash only­–there is an ATM at the farm stand. Bring your own bag. U-pick is not open daily so call ahead to confirm.

Milk Pail Fresh Market
1346 Montauk Highway, Watermill

Apple and pumpkin picking mid-August through late October. The Country Store offers cider, donuts, muffins, pies, cookies, and more. Open Mondays and Wednesday-Saturday 9:30am-5:30pm; Sundays 10am-5:30pm. Call for details about the u-pick varieties available.

Wickham’s Fruit Farms
28700 Main Road, Cutchogue
Apple picking through September into mid-October, Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm. Closed Sunday. Also offers U-pick blackberries and pumpkins (call for availability). Hayrides 9am-4pm on Saturdays and Columbus Day in October.
