Aquariums throughout the New York area (and in Connecticut and New Jersey) are reopening, with many already open with new safety precautions and adjusted hours. Check out this list of aquariums in the New York area where you’ll encounter the many wonders of the sea, including sharks, sting rays, moon jellies, clown fish, and even beluga whales. If you’re feeling daring, you’ll have to visit the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, New Jersey to walk across the suspension bridge that hangs over a 21-foot-deep shark tank!


Aquariums on Long Island

Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium Exhibits and grounds open at limited capacity. Fishing open by reservation only.
1660 Route 25A, Cold Spring Harbor
Hours: daily, 10am-5pm daily; extended weekend hours (10am-6pm) June–August
Fishing reservation appointment times: Friday-Tuesday, 10am-12pm and 1-3pm.
Admission: $7; $6 seniors; $5 children ages 3-12; free for children ages 2 and younger and members
What you need to know: Restrictions include limited patron/visitor presence, a distance of at least 6 ft. is maintained among individuals, visitors wear face coverings

This nonprofit center is dedicated to educating visitors about the freshwater ecosystems of New York. It has the largest living collection of New York state freshwater reptiles, fish, and amphibians. Tour two aquarium buildings and eight outdoor ponds, or feed the hungry trout.

Long Island Aquarium - Outdoor habitats, dining, and outdoor shopping are now open.

Admission: Aquarium tickets (includes exhibition center): $35; $26 seniors; $23 children ages 3-12; free for children 2 and younger. Memberships available.
What you need to know: All adults are required to wear masks, you can buy masks at the aquarium. They are having reduced attendance. Purchase tickets online. There is a one-way flow through the aquarium. guests must reserve a date and time for their visit.

Features one of the largest all-living coral reef displays in this hemisphere, a 120,000-gallon shark tank, year-round sea lion shows, numerous touch tanks, butterflies from all over the world, and more than 100 exhibits and interactive experiences, including Shark Dive, Penguin Encounter, Pirate Snorkel, and Shark Keeper.

Aquariums in NYC

New York Aquarium - Scheduled to reopen on Thursday, Aug. 27.

Hours: Through Sept. 7, 10am-5pm. Sept. 8- Oct. 31, Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm; Weekends and holidays, 10am-4:30pm.
Admission: Adult (13 and older) $26.95; Seniors (65 and older) $24.95; Children (ages 3-12) $22.95
What you need to know: All visitors must have date-specific tickets. Social distancing and masks are required. Avoid gathering at entrances, exits, exhibits, or along pathways.

The New York Aquarium is home to 350 marine species and 18 sharks and ray species on 14 acres on Coney Island.

Aquariums in Connecticut

Maritime Aquarium - Open
10 N. Water St., Norwalk, CT
Hours: Daily, 10am-5pm; Members-only hours, Mondays, 10-11am
Admission: Adults, $26.95; Children, $19.95; Seniors, $24.95; Children under 3 are free.
What you need to know:
Wear a mask, advanced reservations only, social distancing required.

The Maritime Aquarium is a landmark in Connecticut and home to nearly 75 live exhibits featuring more than 2,700 marine animals of 300 species including jellyfish, sharks, tortoises, quail, porcupines, and sea bass.


Mystic Aquarium - Open
55 Coogan Blvd., Mystic, CT
Hours: Monday-Wednesday, 9:30am-5pm; Thursday-Saturday, 9:30am-9pm; Sunday, 9:30am-5pm
Admission: Adult, $26.99-40.99; Child, $19.99-30.49; Seniors, $23.49-$35.74. See website for details
What you need to know: Advanced tickets required with maximum capacity. Temperature screenings at entry. Face coverings required.

Mystic Aquarium is home to thousands of species of marine mammals, fish, invertebrates, and reptiles. Exhibits include beluga whales, sea lions, seals, sharks, penguins, octopi, clownfish, seahorses, sting rays, and jellyfish.


SeaQuest Trumbull - Open

Hours: Monday-Saturday, 11am-7pm; Sunday, 12-6pm
Admission: Adult (12+), $14.88; Senior/military/student, $11.88; Child, $7.95
What you need to know: Reduced occupancy, floor stickers for social distancing. Interactions limited to the same family group. Interactions that are open: snorkel with stingrays, sloth, kinkajou, bengal cats, kookaburra, otters. Toucan interaction temporarily unavailable. Birthday parties limited to 10 people or fewer. Masks required. Contactless payment encouraged.

Seaquest Trumbull aquarium introduces you to thousands of animals from the rainforest, desert, and depths of the sea. You’ll learn about animals and their ecosystems, hand-feed sharks, get swarmed by birds, hold a snake, and come face-to-face with iguanas. Snorkeling experiences are available as well.


Aquariums in New Jersey

Jenkinson’s Aquarium - Open
300 Ocean Ave., Point Pleasant Beach, NJ
Hours: Daily, 10am-10pm; High risk/ elderly hours: Mondays and Thursdays, 9am-10am
What you need to know: Limited occupancy, tickets available at the door. Masks required for everyone over the age of 2. Masks are available for sale in the gift shop. One-way traffic. Social distancing required. Touch experiences unavailable at this time. All published animal feeding times, keeper chats, animal encounters, on-site education programs, and behind-the-scenes tours suspended.

Exhibits like Atlantic sharks, Pacific sharks, coral reefs, penguins, and seals give you the opportunity to get up close to animals from all over the world.

Atlantic City Aquarium - Open
800 N. New Hampshire Ave., Atlantic City, New Jersey
Hours: Daily, 10am-5pm (last admission 4:30pm Sept.-June, 5pm July and Aug.) Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day
Admission: Adults (13-61) $10; Seniors (62 and older) $7; Children (4-12) $6; Ages 3 and younger free

Exhibits include fish of the mid-Atlantic ocean, Moray eels, stony coral tank, soft coral tank, tropical shark touch tank, moon jellies, clownfish and anemone tank, mid-atlantic coastal zone touch tank, diamondback terrapin territory, stingray touch tank, tropical rainforest, mullica river, piranha tank, and Australian exhibit.

Adventure Aquarium - Open

Hours: Daily, 9am-6pm; Members only, Monday-Friday, 9-10am through Sept. 4
Admission: Adults (13+) $31.99; Kids (2-12) $21.99
What you need to know: Capacity limited. Reservations required.

Attractions include Caribbean Currents, Creature Feature, Hippo Haven, the KidZone, Little Blue Beach, Ocean Realm, Penguin Park, Piranha Falls, Sea Turtle Cove, Shark Realm, Stingray Beach Club, Gill’s Grotto, and Touch A Shark. You can even walk just inches above the 21-foot deep Shark Realm exhibit on a V-shaped rope suspension bridge.

New Jersey Sea Life Aquarium - Grand opening postponed

Exhibits will include jellies, the urban jungle, the seahorse mangroves, stingray bay, sharks fish avenue, reef at night, ocean tunnel, ocean view hub, rush hour of the ocean, freshwater, and the tiny giants touch pool.
