President Obama Announces New Community Diaper Program

Did you know that nearly 1 in 3 American families struggle to afford diapers? Did you also know that there is no federal assistance for purchasing diapers? Probably not, but it’s a real problem and President Obama wants to do something about it.

The President will be traveling to Texas, today, to take part in the SXSW festival and to announce the new Community Diaper Program. According to the White House website, “Online retailers, diaper manufacturers and non-profits are partnering to expand access to diapers for families in need.”

Several companies have already jumped at the opportunity to get involved. Huggies is donating 22 million diapers to the National Diaper Bank Network, and will match every diaper donated, up to 1 million, from now until April 10. “Diaper need is an issue we feel very strongly about and have supported through work with the NDBN (National Diaper bank Network), our partners and the donations of millions of diapers over the last six years to ensure Every Little Bottom is clean, dry and healthy. We are pleased to see the issue is receiving national attention from the White House and will continue to do our part as a leader in the effort to combat diaper need, Giusy Buonfantino, president of Kimberly-Clark, said in a statement.

Also, non-profits can get discounted diapers through Jet.com by applying to the Community Diaper Program. Cuties-brand diaper packs will be sold to applicants at a heavily discounted price, half the cost of the nation average, to be exact. According to a press release, “These Jet-exclusive Cuties Economy Plus Packs of diapers will be available for anyone to purchase in late April….Jet will directly fulfill orders from their warehouses so the diapers can be distributed to the nonprofits who serve families in need.”

Jessica Alba’s Honest Co. will also be donating 1 million diapers to the Baby2Baby foundation, to be distributed to families in need.

The White House website lists several ways that you can get involved:
