The United States Air Force Concert Band and Singing Sergeants from Washington, D.C. - Tilles Center for the Performing Arts

Holiday camps are open to both Rolling River families and non-enrolled families. Rolling River is conveniently located 1 mile south of Sunrise Highway on Ocean Avenue and is 1 block from the LIRR East Rockaway train station. Free train parking is available for those parents who commute on the LIRR.

Treasure That Trash - Ward Melville Heritage Organization

In commemoration of Earth Month, the Ward Melville Heritage Organization presents Treasure That Trash, a not-to-be-missed exhibit of impressive artistry created from a variety of common items including recycled materials, spray paint, glass and many more. In this popular cutting-edge genre, artists bring originality and imagination to their works and offer a whole new meaning to the phrase, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Artists from across Long Island will participate with their intricate masterpieces cultivated from a desire to preserve the environment while nurturing their passion for art. Artists to date include:

Bergés Alvarez - creates seascapes and landscapes from recycled materials such as plastic bags, aluminum foil and frayed packing materials. 

Janene Gentile - uses recycled glass, spray paint and reclaimed acrylic paints to create her works on canvas.

Ted Thirlby - will display a selection of his “plywood series” paintings using stain and oils on salvaged plywood pieces.

Michael Cole - aka “Copper Mike,” an artist and metal worker who incorporates those skills into his master motorcycle building.

The Theresa Academy of Performing Arts, a beautifully unique program for children and young adults with special needs, announces its fall lineup of after school programming. An array of subjects are being offered after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays, including art, music, drumming, yoga, and Zumba. This is the second exhibition in a series that highlights portfolios of prints and photographs from the Hofstra University Museum’s permanent collections. For the portfolio on view, Offset Lithographic Prints, artists experimented using a commercial press for creating fine art prints. Works by Chuck Close, John Moore, Olga Moore, Italo Scanga, Salvatore Scarpitta, and Miriam Schapiro, among others, are included.

Hunting the Whale: The Rise and Fall of a Southampton Industry - Southampton Historical Museum - Rogers Mansion

This interactive and inclusive exhibit adds new discoveries to the accumulation of documentation and artifacts collected over more than 100 years to illuminate Southampton Village’s prominent role in the whaling industry at its mid-19th century height. Whaling tools, maps, illustrations, archival images and text will be displayed with an eye toward making the exhibit accessible to audiences of varied interests and all ages. Among those whose roles will be highlighted are local indigenous people, slaves, servants, whaling captains, and the families that were sustained by the whaling industry.  This exhibit takes place inside the historic Captain Albert Rogers Mansion, a 20 room Greek-revival house was built in 1843 during the peak of the whaling industry. It was built by Captain Rogers was one of the many prosperous whaling captains living in Southampton during the 19th century. The Rogers Mansion is a property of the Southampton Historical Museum.

Romare Bearden: Storyteller - Emily Lowe Gallery, behind Emily Lowe Hall, South Campus

The narrative themes of Romare Bearden’s work spanned historical, political, and religious topics. Through his innovative works of art, Bearden communicated his ideas and thoughts about everyday African-American life in 20th century America. The exhibition includes prints in a variety of methods (aquatint, engraving, etching, lithograph, and silkscreen) from the Hofstra University Museum Collections.
