Dumbo Holiday Tree Lighting - Pearl Street Triangle

Free and open to all, this year's DUMBO holiday tree lighting ceremony includes a visit from Santa Claus, complete with a photo booth, calypso music from Brooklyn-based steel drum band Jah Pan, caroling, treats and hot cocoa, and a toy drive. The tree, donated by Adam Parke Trees at Windswept Farm, will be lit at 6pm sharp. 

    'The Largest Menorah in Brooklyn' Lighting and Chanukah Celebration - Grand Army Plaza
    Through December 09, 2018 - Prospect Heights

    Chabad of Park Slope will light "the largest menorah in Brooklyn" (the world's menorah largest is in Manhattan) in Grand Army Plaza on the first night of Chanukah, December 2. The festivities will include a live concert on the first night, plus more music, fresh latkes, and gifts for children on every subsequent night of Chanukah.

    VR Art Studio Class - Create Artwork on a 360° Canvas - YokeyPokey Virtual Reality Club
    Through December 10, 2018 - Boerum Hill

    In this VR Art Studio Class, the Virtual Picassos are introduced to different themes, styles, aesthetic and techniques of the masters. In addition to theory, students will be exposed to how artists masterpieces were recreated in a Virtual Reality world brush stroke by brush stroke. Students will learn and explore inside these paintings, recreate works of art in the same style and then create their own unique paintings. Students will develop their drawing and painting skills using direct observation and imagination. All their work will be done on a virtual 360 degree canvas inside a VR world. Just imagine having no limitations, all space around you is your canvas. Student’s will be guided by a professional artist who has created VR works of art and has worked with all ages and skill levels. All works of art will be saved and shared at the end of the class. Our classes combine an element of education and fun. Each class consists of 1 hour of learning and ½ hour of VR play or continued work on their artwork after.

    'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens - The Heights Players at The John Bourne Theater

    This is the classic tale of our favorite holiday miser, Scrooge, who is visited by four spirits, including his old business partner Jacob Marley and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Through a series of visits to Scrooges youth, to the Fezziwigs office party, and finally to a future vision of his lonesome dark grave if Scrooge continues his ways, the ghosts show Scrooge the way to embrace the holidays and generosity. This fast-paced adaptation shares one of the greatest ghost stories of all time and is a holiday classic.

    Santaland - Macy's
    Through December 24, 2018 - Midtown

    An annual tradition for so many families, visiting Santaland at Macy's means entering a fantasy world of glittering pine trees, snow-capped mountains, twinkling lights, cuddly animals, and gingerbread cookies. The 13,000-square-foot Christmas Village is filled with holiday treasures, the biggest of which is Santa Claus himself. After meeting Santa, guests can buy a photo package with images taken by on-site staff. This year, visits are by reservation only.

    This fall, ABC Languages is excited to offer American Sign Languages (ASL) at Spark! In this playful and educational program, students and caregivers will learn the basics of the language, including numbers, colors, greetings, family terms and more.     2018 Gingerbread Lane Workshops - New York Hall of Science

    Make a GingerBread Lane house or train! This year’s GingerBread Lane workshops will give participants the option to design and build their own ginger bread house or train — it’s up to you to decide which one you want to create. Each participant will receive a kit with all of the materials that Chef Jon Lovitch uses to create his GingerBread Lane exhibit including: gingerbread pieces, icing, and candy.

    Please note: While this workshop is about building, and not consuming, the gingerbread, icing and candy provided, parents of children with food allergies should email publicprograms@nysci.org to decide if this workshop is appropriate for them.  Children must be accompanied by an adult. Limit of two structures per customer. Registration required.

     

    Lavender Blues Music & Movement - Spark by Brooklyn Children's Museum

    Teaching musician Lavender Blues explores music, movement, and rhythm with children ages 1-3 years in this engaging jam session. During this class kids develop an understanding of rhythm and music, build awareness and control of their body as well as develop social and coordination skills. Taught by Alex Louis-Jacques, founder, Lavender Blues. Class size limited to 20 children and their caregivers. Drop-ins welcome.

    Classic Mew-vie Night - Brooklyn Cat Cafe
    Through December 31, 2018 - Cobble Hill

    Watch a classic movie along with the cats of the Brooklyn cat cafe as they nap soundly in your lap, or perhaps purr distractingly as you try to pay attention. Ticket price includes a snack and drink. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult and everyone must sign a waiver.

    Winterfest - Brooklyn Museum

    For six weeks, a portion of the Brooklyn Museum’s grounds will be transformed into a Winter Wonderland featuring winter activities, holiday shopping from local and international vendors, and cultural programs for visitors and local New Yorkers of all ages. Occupying 40,000 square feet between the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Winterfest will open Friday, November 23rd, the day after Thanksgiving, and the merry festivities will run seven days a week through December 31st. Winterfest is the quintessential outing for community members, families, friends, tourists, and groups for work parties and school trips. With visitors coming from all over the world, Winterfest will be one of the highlights of New York’s holiday season.

    Winterfest’s wide variety of entertaining attractions will include:

    ?•Vinopolis Wine Tasting Experience - An interactive tasting experience inviting wine enthusiasts to embark on a journey from grape to glass.

    ?•Enchanted Tree Maze - A spectacular, entrancing maze through sparkling, lighted trees that explores holiday traditions from 20 countries and cultures from around the world.

    •Snowzilla - An entertaining aspect of this Winter Wonderland, people of all ages can enjoy the thrill of this fun slide. 

    •World’s Largest Snowman - Bouncy, the gigantic man made of snow, will be standing tall for a unique picturesque moments at Winterfest. 

    •The Chocolate Dome Story - An interactive experience made entirely of sweet treats, where festival goers can play, taste and even learn about the origins of this favorite delicacy. 

    ?•Giant Snowglobe- A life size experience, for families and friends to walk through together and enjoy the holiday season. 

    ?•Life is Beautiful Stage - Guests can enjoy nightly live music and entertainment from a variety of local musicians. 

    ?•Food and Beverages - To highlight the holidays, there will be themed food and drink for all festival attendees. 

    ?•Spectacular Menorah - Special programming designed to include all holidays, will feature menorah lighting, specialty food, music performances and festivities for children. 

    The Little Orchestra Society: The Three C's…Culture, Classical Music, and Composing! - Brooklyn Children's Museum

    Throughout December, The Little Orchestra Society is in residence at Brooklyn Children’s Museum for a series of family music workshops. Each session explores music of a different culture, engaging children, parents, and caregivers through movement, song, composition, and an introduction to world instruments. Sessions accommodate up to 25 participants on a first-come, first served basis.

    Each week children are introduced to an artist and an activity inspired by their techniques, materials, and ideas. Activities invite young artists to build and refine their fine motor skills; engage in sensory exploration of materials, and learn how to share with others in this open art studio. There is no such thing as a bad mess in this space, which is tailored to children five and younger.

    World Brooklyn - Brooklyn Children's Museum

    In World Brooklyn, children play in kid-sized shops based on the real ones you find in neighborhoods across Brooklyn. In these environments, kids take on the roles of shopkeeper, baker, grocer, shopper, designer, performer, and builder as they gain an understanding and appreciation of the cooperative roles that enable communities to thrive. This exhibit is designed to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the world cultures found in Brooklyn. Through objects and stories drawn from real people and places in the borough’s diverse communities, children learn about themselves and their neighbors.

    Farmer's Market - Grand Army Plaza

    Founded in 1989, Grand Army Plaza is Greenmarket's flagship Brooklyn market, and the second largest market in the program, behind Union Square. Located at the northwest entrance to beautiful Prospect Park? and just steps from the Brooklyn Public Library, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. This community destination brings together a mix of shoppers from the nearby neighborhoods of Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, and beyond. Runners, dog-walkers, families, singles and foodies all converge to buy from the huge array of farm fresh products, and to participate in the programming and cooking demonstrations that take place every Saturday all year long.     Waterfront Exhibition - Brooklyn Historical Society Dumbo

    Located in Empire Stores directly on Brooklyn Bridge Park near Jane's Carousel, Brooklyn Historical Society DUMBO is an exciting new museum that highlights the amazing history and beauty of the Brooklyn waterfront. The museum is open Monday-Sunday from 11am-7pm and family programs are planned for Fall 2017.

    Holding History - Brooklyn Children's Museum

    What makes an object “historical?” Why do museums keep objects behind glass? Children will ponder these questions holding, touching, and feeling historical artifacts from the museum's collection. They will learn about the history of those objects through this tactical investigation and by relating these historical artifacts to their own lives.

    Live Animal Adventure - Brooklyn Children's Museum

    Enjoy an interactive animal show and meet real reptiles from the museum's Live Collection. Ages 4 and older.

    NYC Winter Lantern Festival - Snug Harbor

    This newcomer in winter displays features illuminated laterns in a vareity of scenes, including Sea World, Holiday Zone, Light Tunnel, Chinese Lights, Panda Paradise, Wonderland, and Animal Kingdom. The festival also has a food court, gift shop, and cultural performances.

    TapeScape - Brooklyn Children's Museum

    Get ready to explore Brooklyn's first TapeScape, an interactive art installation made from unexpected everyday materials! Built in collaboration with artist Eric Lennartson, this tape universe will spark the imagination and encourage curiosity, creativity, and gross motor play.

    Gingerbread Lane - New York Hall of Science
    Through January 21, 2019 - Corona

    Visitors marvel at homemade gingerbread houses made entirely of edible gingerbread, royal icing, and candy. The houses are drafted, designed, baked, planned, built and decorated by creator Jon Lovitch over the course of an entire year. GingerBread Lane has won the Guinness World Record for 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 for the largest gingerbread village.

    Harry Potter: A History of Magic - New-York Historical Society
    Through January 27, 2019 - Upper West Side

    Following a blockbuster run in London, Harry Potter: A History of Magic captures the traditions of folklore and magic at the heart of the Harry Potter stories. Organized by the British Library, the exhibition features centuries-old treasures, including rare books, manuscripts, and magical objects from the collections of the British Library, the New-York Historical Society, and other museums, as well as original material from American publisher Scholastic and J.K. Rowling’s own archives. Unique to New York Historical’s presentation—and on public view for the very first time—are Mary GrandPré’s pastel illustrations of Scholastic’s original editions of the novels; Brian Selznick’s newly created artwork for the covers of the 20th anniversary edition of the Harry Potter series published by Scholastic; cover art by Kazu Kibuishi featured in Scholastic’s 15th anniversary box set; and costumes and set models from the theatrical production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. An exciting line-up of exhibition-related events for Harry Potter fans of all ages will also be presented. 
     

    Escher: The Exhibition and Experience - Industry City

    Exhibition: Impractical Jokers: Homecoming - Staten Island Museum at Snug Harbor

    Impractical Jokers: Homecoming explores the story of four longtime friends from Staten Island whose hidden-camera, comedic television show, Impractical Jokers, has become a pop culture phenomenon. Steeped in embarrassment and awkward situations that make us laugh and cringe, the humor is built upon a foundation of trust and camaraderie amongst the four guys, James “Murr” Murray, Sal Vulcano, Brain “Q” Quinn, and Joe Gatto. See original costumes, props and art created over the past seven seasons. View new interviews, episode highlights and learn about behind-the-scenes production, including some secrets. Take a journey with the Jokers from high school hijinks to mainstream comedic success that all started on the shores of Staten Island. Interactive surprises are found throughout the museum to make the Jokers’ exhibition experience as unexpected as the Impractical Jokers themselves. 

    The Buttons Weekend Sing-Along - Edamama Cute Cuts & More

    Please join The Buttons Band (Caitlin Mahoney and Hannah Winkler) for a grooving weekend sing-along on Saturdays at Edamama! Enjoy an energetic 45-minute set of our original tunes, classic children's songs, and oldies rock n' roll that is sure to get both kids and grown-ups singing and dancing! We hand out shakers, teach some moves, and encourage everyone to get their bodies grooving to the music. The Buttons' sing-along is a wonderful opportunity to bond with your child and your community through the love of music and the joy it brings.

    ColorLab is BCM's new family art studio inspired by contemporary African American, Afro-Caribbean, and African artists! Rotating programs will feature the work and material inspirations of African American, Afro-Caribbean, and African contemporary artists including Chakaia Booker, Wangechi Mutu, and Jack Whitten. Learn about Afrofuturism through a toolbox containing books, materials, and prompts to guide creating. Each visit to ColorLab will offer new ways to experiment with art and new ideas to explore. Hands-on programs will be supported by BCM’s teaching artists and educators.

    Donald Zucker and Barbara Hrbek Zucker Ocean Wonders: Sharks! - New York Aquarium

    Explore the coral reef, wander through a shipwreck, and peer over the Hudson Canyon in this brand new exhibit all about sharks, opening year-round beginning June 30. More than 115 species including sand tiger sharks, sandbar sharks, and loggerhead sea turtles live in this state-of-the-art exhibit.

    Staff Story Time - Greenlight Bookstore

    Friday/Saturday Drop-In - Brooklyn Game Lab

    Drop off the kids (ages 8 and up) for Friday drop-in, role-playing game (RPG) night. Brooklyn Game Lab run great D&D campaigns for new and highly experienced RPG-players. Saturday nights are geared towards our Teen Pass members, but all older kids (12 and up) are welcome to participate. Play sophisticated RPGs with complex campaigns and awesome characters, plus get some DM training.
