Join us at an upcoming Open House and learn just how special a summer at Usdan can be. During each event, the campus is yours to visit and explore. Refreshments, information, and 2019 registration will be available throughout the day. Families who sign up for the 2019 summer at an Open House will receive a chance to “spin to win” merchandise or a tuition discount. Birding with Frank: Shinnecock Specialties - South Fork Natural History Museum
February 02, 2019 - Bridgehampton

The barrier beach area at Shinnecock is one of the few remaining undeveloped dune/salt marsh habitats on the eastern end of Long Island, an area that frequently has wintering Snowy Owls and Short-Eared Owls. Join Frank on this birding expedition at Shinnecock, one of SOFO’s most popular birding walks. If we’re lucky, we may see either of these two owls and even an American Bittern, Snow Bunting, or a lingering Clapper Rail. Bring binoculars and/or a spotting scope and a field guide to birds of the Eastern United States (if you have one). This walk is for adults and teens, although children over the age of 10 may attend. A shuttle bus will be available from SOFO to the birding location. The multi-talented Jay Siegel is best known for his soaring falsetto on the classic mega-hit, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” Two of the Top 50 most popular records in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame belong to The Crystals with hits like “Uptown,” “He’s a Rebel,” “He’s Sure the Boy I Love,” “Da Doo Ron Ron,” and “Then He Kissed Me.” The Marcels are, as advertised, the guys who put the “Bomp” in the “Bomp-A-Bomp” back in 1961 when their first recording, “Blue Moon,” sold over two and a half million copies. Then vote for your favorite soup, and when all the ballots are tallied, the 2019 SOUPer BOWL Champ is determined. The winner will receive the “People’s Choice Award.” There will also be a select Judges’ Panel with celebrities and culinary experts. The winner, as determined by a vote of the Panel, is given the prestigious “Judges’ Choice Award.” The participating restaurants also provide bread and crackers for the tasters. The Port Washington Chamber of Commerce will be collecting non-perishable food which will be donated to local families in need.

Annual Groundhog Day Celebration - Holtsville Ecology Site

Six more weeks of winter or an early spring? Hundreds will gather at the Brookhaven Wildlife and Ecology Center to hear Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro announce Holtsville Hal’s famous forecast. According to tradition, if a groundhog sees its shadow after stirring from hibernation on Groundhog Day, there will be six more weeks of winter weather; if not, spring should arrive early. Although he’s sure to be the center of attention, Holtsville Hal will not be the only animal available for viewing. Following the ceremony, residents are welcome to enjoy some free hot chocolate and visit the Animal Preserve, which will have more than 100 animals on display.

Every Friday from 5:00-9:00pm, the Library will be closed to everyone except Tweens and Teens (grades 4-12). Activities vary week to week. Participants must arrive before 7:00pm when the doors will be locked for the evening. Participants can leave when they wish, but re-admittance will not be allowed. During this time, we will have a variety of activities, including video games, board games, movies, and much more. In order to participate in Friday Night In, each child must have a permission slip signed by a parent/guardian and parents must come to the library to sign the permission slip in person.

A free workshop series for adoptive and guardianship parents raising children with adverse childhood experiences or difficult past histories. During this six week series, parents will explore: Building connections with your child before correcting their misbehaviors by using an attitude of play, acceptance, curiosity, and empathy. Supporting your child through their sometimes difficult behavior to get them back on track to more socially acceptable behavior. Concepts of self-care, figure out where your relationship with your child is blocked and how to deepen connections with them. Refreshments and childcare provided. Winter Engineer Club - Suffolk County Farm

Hidden in Sight: Photographing Incarceration - Hofstra University Museum

The United States has the highest rate of incarceration of any country in the world, with over 2 million people currently imprisoned. This exhibition features photographs spanning more than 50 years by three artists, Danny Lyon (American, born 1942), Jessica Earnshaw (Canadian, born 1983), and Isadora Kosofsky (American, born 1993), highlighting the varied critical issues within the prison system in America.

Blind Date with a Book! - Baldwin Public Library

The librarians are selecting a variety of teen books and wrapping them so your date’s identity will be a surprise. Check your book out as you normally would, then take it home to unwrap. Will it be a romance, mystery, thriller? Each book comes with a rate your date slip, Stud or Dud. Write a brief comment about your date and return the slip to the Teen Zone by March 15 to be entered in a raffle for a prize.
 

Seal Walks - Montauk Point State Park
Through March 31, 2019 - Montauk

Montauk Point State Park will host a series of walks to observe wintering seals. A State Park naturalist will lead visitors on a leisurely beach walk to an area where up to four species of seals can be observed. Along the way, there will be opportunities to see many winter birds and to explore marine geology. Binoculars are recommended. The walk is approximately 3 miles long and will take 2-3 hours to complete. Participants are asked to please dress appropriately, wear footwear appropriate for hiking, and meet at the Montauk Point Lighthouse Grill and concession stand at least 10 minutes prior to the start time. Reservations required.

SAT & ACT Practice Exams - Sylvan of Huntington

Sylvan of Huntington will now be offering SAT and ACT Practice Tests every Saturday. If your child will be preparing to take their SAT or ACT exams this winter or spring, then what better way to start the process then by mapping out their strengths and weaknesses. Practice exams will run on Saturdays from 9:30-12:30 pm. Afterwards, families will be invited back to sit down with a director and get a detailed report which will analyze exactly how their child did and where they can improve. Sylvan offers prep programs year round for both the SAT and ACT and interested students can sign up for courses to help get ready for the big day.
