Wildman Steve Brill celebrates 37 years of foraging with a romp through Prospect Park. The park includes so many varied habitats and it's loaded with shoots and greens in late spring, many of which are edible and medicinal. 

The tour begins with spicy hedge mustard and poor man's pepper greens, growing near the Grand Army Plaza entrance, then moves on to a vast stand of celery-, parsley-, and carrot-flavored goutweed, stopping for violet leaves and flowers along the way.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden invites you to make a special morning visit to the Discovery Garden with your family before BBG opens to the public. Explore the garden at your own pace and participate in multisensory activities at facilitated stations.

  • Water, weed, and plant in the fruit and vegetable garden.
  • Use real tools to explore plants.
  • Read stories.

We invite your feedback as we strive to make the Garden engaging for families who have children with disabilities.

  • One ASL translator will be stationed in the Garden.
  • Accessible bathrooms and wheelchairs are available at the Flatbush Avenue entrance. Inside the nearby Discovery Garden, pathways and exhibits are accessible to visitors using wheelchairs.
  • Visitors are encouraged to touch and smell plants, and hands-on exhibits feature sound, visual, and tactile elements designed for accessibility.
  • A visual schedule and details about transportation, entry, and what to expect will be sent out in advance to families who have preregistered.
  • Snacking is permitted, and a quiet seating area will be available before and during the event.
  • Families are encouraged to bring a friend with or without disabilities; include them in your RSVP.

Check out the exhibit Waterfront and stay for this collage activity designed to encourage artistic self-expression and build group interaction. 

Children create collages on background line drawings that depict either the DUMBO waterfront, the Empire Stores (past and present), or New York City landmarks such as the Brooklyn Bridge.

Following the activity, stick around to enjoy the many family-friendly parts of Waterfront with children as young as one-year old to:

  • Dress up like the women welders of the Brooklyn Navy Yard in WWII.
  • Touch and smell goods, like cochineal bugs and coffee beans, which passed through Empire Stores when it was a busy warehouse.
  • Use our Brooklyn waterfront magnet board to design your own city.

CP Soccer for Kids With Cerebral Palsy - Cadman Plaza
Through June 16, 2019 - New York

CP soccer is a league for kids with cerebral palsy, hemiplegia or traumatic brain injury to play soccer with peers just like them. Kids must be ambulatory and be able to run and kick a ball. Training each Sunday by special coaches trained for CP soccer. Boys and girls are welcome and no prior experience with soccer is required.

Class will begin with a brief centering, a collection of ourselves in breath and space, and will gently evolve into a flow of movement and meditation. Brooklyn resident James Martinelli’s Cardio Dance and Range of Movement workout offers improved strength and increased flexibility.

Set to swinging show tunes, this class is appropriate for anyone who wants a safe, effective, and fun workout. Sneakers are a must.

Registration begins at 9:30 am before each class. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All participants must sign a waiver each morning before participating.

Donald Zucker and Barbara Hrbek Zucker Ocean Wonders: Sharks! - New York Aquarium

Explore the coral reef, wander through a shipwreck, and peer over the Hudson Canyon in this brand new exhibit all about sharks, open year-round. More than 115 species, including sand tiger sharks, sandbar sharks, and loggerhead sea turtles, live in this state-of-the-art exhibit.

Public Art: Bridge Over Tree - Brooklyn Bridge Park

The newest Public Art Fund installation, Iranian artist Siah Armajani’s Bridge Over Tree, is now open at Empire Fulton Ferry Lawn.

Armajani’s artwork features a 91-foot-long walkway with a set of stairs that rise and fall over a single evergreen tree, inviting people to experience the idea of a bridge in a new way. The piece will be on display daily from 6am-1am until September 29, 2019.

The Art Force 5 welcomes young and old superheroes-in-training to come make their own superhero action figure and customized cape. A huge comic book exhibit depicting the history of comic books alongside equal rights will delight both comic novices and enthusiasts. Visitors will be invited to paint a tile that, when joining forces with hundreds of others, will make some beautiful public art celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance. All free, all fun, and open to all ages.

The American Indian Community House will host art exhibitions and artists talks with three Native artists from New York City. Join volcanologists from CUNY and other NYC institutions to discover the complex life of magmas and volcanos – and the rich volcanic history of the New York region – through virtual reality experiences, a volcano sound gallery, guest speakers, and kid-friendly activities.

New York Road Runners Open Run - Pier 6, Brooklyn Bridge Park

Open Run is a new community-based initiative that empowers local volunteers to bring free weekly runs to local neighborhood parks all over NYC. All runs are directed by volunteers and are free to all participants. The finish line is open until the last person is done. The courses vary based on park, but they are between 2½-3 miles.

Participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the run and to leave their valuables at home as bag check is not provided. No need to do anything before the run, just show up. Open to all ages, experience levels, walkers, strollers, dogs: All are welcome.
