A Distant Embrace - Rockland Center for the Arts

Hudson Valley artist Robert Hite grew up in Virginia but has traveled the world. Hite is interested in exploring issues of local knowledge, memory, transience, environment, disenfranchisement and domicile as living art through sculpture, painting and photography. Much of his photographic work juxtaposes the artificial and the natural and play with architectural scale. Hite’s cottages and cabins, many on stilts, have a lopsided, somewhat ramshackle air to them, as if nature is slowly reclaiming the buildings. Hite has shown his work widely, including a solo show at The Nassau County Museum of Art, the Hancock Shaker Village and the Berkshire Museum. Hite was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2014. The exhibit is on view October 8 through November 19, 2017. Three separate exhibitions based on this subject include a solo exhibit, “A Distant Embrace”, works by Robert Hite. “Dwellings” with artists Eric Cremers, Jennie Chien, Lynn Cornelius, Susan Cox, Kevin Frances, Hao Ni, and Charlotte Schulz. “Home” is a smaller group show of selected artists. Public Space Mission - Town of Ramapo Challenger Center
November 19, 2017 - Airmont

Reserve a seat on the flight deck. We’re going to fly to a comet. You may have heard about comets named Halley, Hale-Bopp, or perhaps even Shoemaker-Levy 9, and on this public mission you will learn much more about these mysterious objects made of rock, ice, and dust that are among the oldest, most primitive bodies in our Solar System. Just like the real astronauts, public crew-members will attend a briefing session and then select tasks to perform on the mission like Navigation, Medical, Communication, and Life Support. Small teams of space adventurers will conduct research, perform scientific experiments, and even deploy a probe. Tasks are detailed enough to feel real and challenging, simple enough for kids to do, and fun! Participants will begin their work in either Mission Control or the Spacecraft, and half way through the mission, a crew exchange provides the “astronauts” an opportunity to experience the other simulator. It’s a chance for families or individuals to have fun and at the same time learn the importance of working together to achieve a common goal. Public missions are offered at the Challenger Center on the third Sunday of every month, with voyages to the Moon and to Mars as well as to a Comet. For reservations or more information about this unique experience, contact Commander John at the Challenger Center: 845-357-3416, or email: [email protected]
