The Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic at the Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center is recruiting members for "Speaking of Toddlers," a language stimulation group for toddlers and preschoolers. Through developmentally appropriate play, sensory-based activities, and snack/craft/story time, children develop vocabulary and social communication skills. Language facilitation strategies, peer to peer interactions in small group settings, and parent training are used to achieve each child's individual language/communication goals. Santaland - Macy's

An annual tradition for so many families, visiting Santaland at Macy's means entering a fantasy world of glittering pine trees, snow-capped mountains, twinkling lights, cuddly animals, and gingerbread cookies. The 13,000-square-foot Christmas Village is filled with holiday treasures, the biggest of which is Santa Claus himself. After meeting Santa, guests can buy a photo package with images taken by on-site staff. This year, visits are by reservation only.

'Rothko: An Abstract Humanist' - Nassau County Museum of Art

This program offers a rare examination of the life and work of Mark Rothko. Rothko gave abstraction the emotional power of music 
and poetry. He painted ideas rather than objects and, in the process, created a deeply original pictorial language. One of the most important artists of his generation, Rothko is perhaps best known for his work in the style of the New York School and was a peer of many other illustrious abstract artists: Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still, Franz Kline, and Robert Motherwell, to name only five. 52 minutes.

Nothing in art is more powerful than color. From Matisse to Mark Rothko and Frank Stella, and onward to the huge Color Field canvases and pulsing neon sculptures of today, color as a means of expression is the keynote for this wildly exuberant show. Potent even to the point of being considered dangerous, it is the most exciting element of art, the strongest tool in the toolbox. “Color, above all, is a means of liberation,” Matisse declared. 

The full range of color’s magic is on display in this exuberant show of over 100 works from the nineteenth century to this moment’s hottest talents. The roll call is a hit parade of art history’s most exciting names: Kandinsky, Motherwell, Warhol, Wolf Kahn, James Nares, Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Mitchell, David Hockney, and many more. It all begins with a monumental painting by Titian, considered the original champion of color in art, in a dramatic installation.

The Big Bolt! - Long Island Children's Museum

Jimmi is a confident, curious girl and aspiring engineer who loves to build and explore the neighborhood with her friendly dog Conrad. Her curiosity can sometimes get her into trouble, though. While visiting a local construction site, Jimmi decides to take a big, important-looking bolt home with her. A hilarious chain of events unfold, involving a confused mail carrier, a melodramatic opera singer and an overly confident construction supervisor. With Conrad’s guidance, Jimmi learns to take responsibility for her choices. Laugh along with Jimmi in this comical romp, and learn important lessons about honesty, consequences and forgiveness.

2018 Gingerbread Lane Workshops - New York Hall of Science

Make a GingerBread Lane house or train! This year’s GingerBread Lane workshops will give participants the option to design and build their own ginger bread house or train — it’s up to you to decide which one you want to create. Each participant will receive a kit with all of the materials that Chef Jon Lovitch uses to create his GingerBread Lane exhibit including: gingerbread pieces, icing, and candy.

Please note: While this workshop is about building, and not consuming, the gingerbread, icing and candy provided, parents of children with food allergies should email publicprograms@nysci.org to decide if this workshop is appropriate for them.  Children must be accompanied by an adult. Limit of two structures per customer. Registration required.

 

A Children's Theatre Presentation: 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' - Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts

Irving Berlin's 'White Christmas' - Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts

Based on the beloved, timeless film, this heartwarming musical adaptation features seventeen Irving Berlin songs and a book by David Ives and Paul Blake. Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a successful song-and-dance act after World War II. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander. The dazzling score features well known standards including Blue Skies, I Love A Piano, How Deep Is the Ocean and the perennial favorite, White Christmas.

Traveling Exhibit -TINKERTOY®: Build Your Imagination™ - Long Island Children's Museum

With LICM’S 25th birthday approaching, we wanted an exhibit in place that would highlight the innovation, collaboration and play LICM is known for!  Giant replicas of the classic TINKERTOY construction set provide the framework for fun, educational activities inspired by GE technologies that turn imagination into working solutions to real world challenges. Visitors can explore a walk-in size replica of the iconic canister, create their own designs in an open play area, experiment with renewable energy and water filtration and take part in a special scavenger hunt.

Financial Planning Series: 529 College Savings Program - Sid Jacobson JCC

Over the next three months, Sid Jacobson JCC, in partnership with Project S.A.F.E., will host a three-part Financial Planning Series aimed at educating the sandwich generation on how to maintain financial security while balancing the responsibilities of raising children and caring for aging parents. The first session will focus on a 529 College Savings Plan and will take place on Tuesday, November 6 at 7:30pm. The best line of defense against the rising cost of higher education is to start saving early, and a 529 College Savings Plan can help do that. The plan, which is part savings program and part investment program, is an account that can be used for college and other eligible post-secondary education institutes. Attendees will have the opportunity to take part in discussions about the 529 College Savings Plan led by special guest Jack Schnirman, Nassau County Comptroller, and other financial professionals including: John Ryan, CLTC and partner at Ryan & Janowsky Financial Strategies Group; Peter Janowsky, Accredited Investment Fiduciary and partner at Ryan & Janowsky Financial Strategies Group; and Eric Fracasso, regional vice president at INVESCO. The second session in this three-part series will cover the benefits of a long-term care insurance policy and an aging plan for your parents. This session will take place on December 5, 7:30pm at Sid Jacobson JCC. The third and final session in this series will cover the importance of not forgetting about yourself and the need to fully fund your retirement account and the power of annuities. This session will take place on January 8, 7:30pm at Sid Jacobson JCC. The November 6 session is free to members. Tickets for non-members are $10 and can be purchased at www.sjjcc.org/parenting. Gingerbread Lane - New York Hall of Science

Visitors marvel at homemade gingerbread houses made entirely of edible gingerbread, royal icing, and candy. The houses are drafted, designed, baked, planned, built and decorated by creator Jon Lovitch over the course of an entire year. GingerBread Lane has won the Guinness World Record for 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 for the largest gingerbread village.
