Journey with us through three different North American environments— the freezing Arctic, the cool Northeast Coast, and the lush Northeast Forest. In each of these places, you’ll find taxidermied animals to explore, books that feature our animal friends to read, challenges to match the tracks and scat that animals leave behind, and opportunities to create and act out your own original stories. Visit the RZ research station to learn more about faraway places on the globe and the amazing animals found there.

Led by Greenlight bookseller Wynne, this young readers book group in Prospect Lefferts Garden is geared toward kids ages 9 to 12, and reads great contemporary and classic chapter books. Parents are welcome (but not required) to attend, and pizza is served. For October, the group discusses Kelly Barnhill’s Newbery Award-winning The Girl Who Drank the Moon. Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the Forest, Xan, is kind. She rescues the children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey. One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. As Luna’s thirteenth birthday approaches, her magic begins to emerge—with dangerous consequences.

Green Team provides essential horticultural care to the Park, including planting, mulching, and removing invasive plants. Green Team is a wonderful opportunity to learn about gardening, enjoy nature, and make the Park look its best.

All volunteers must fill out a waiver and bring it to their first volunteer activity in the park. Volunteers 18 years old or younger should submit their waiver signed by a parent or guardian before any activity begins; volunteers 16 years old or younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No experience necessary.

Groups with 10 members or fewer are welcome to join in Green Team sessions. Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator/Elizabeth Harnett at to request a date.

Imaging Women In The Space Age - New York Hall of Science

This exhibition includes vintage and current images of women as aviators and astronauts from fashion, television, film, pop culture and toys (e.g. Barbie and LEGO astronaut dolls), as well as new developments in space-inspired fashion (space gear/spacesuits for women). This unique exhibition showcases the achievements of America’s pioneering astronauts and highlights the fascination with space women. From the earliest moon goddesses to today’s galactic fashions, visions of females in space have sparked the creative imagination.

The exhibition includes photographs of pioneering astronauts including Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space, Mae Jemison, America’s first African-American female astronaut, and Ellen Ochoa, America’s first Hispanic woman to go into space. There are also photographs of Dr. Ellen K. Baker, an astronaut who has logged more than 600 hours in space. Dr. Baker grew up in New York City and is the daughter of former Queens Borough President Claire Shulman.

Also on display are vintage and current images of female space travelers in television shows like Lost in Space and Star Trek,photographs of space-inspired fashions including Pucci’s designs for Braniff Airlines flight attendants and Chanel’s 2017 futuristic dresses, and screenshots from films like Barbarella, which starred Jane Fonda and Gravity, which starred Sandra Bullock.

Open Run is a new community-based initiative that empowers local volunteers to bring free weekly runs to local neighborhood parks all over NYC. All runs are directed by volunteers and are free to all participants. The finish line is open until the last person is done. The courses vary based on park, but they are between 2½-3 miles.

Participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the run and to leave their valuables at home as bag check is not provided. No need to do anything before the run, just show up. Open to all ages, experience levels, walkers, strollers, dogs: All are welcome.

Fight for Sunlight Exhibit - Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s greenhouse complex was built in the 1980s to cultivate and display plants from environments around the world. Specifically selected for its access to sunlight, this is one of the only places in New York City where you can see such a diverse collection of rare plants in bloom year-round. Now it’s under threat.

Come learn about the history of these buildings, the rare plants that thrive here, and why allowing the construction of massive towers would be catastrophic.

An Opening, an installation of audio and visual artworks by Brooklyn-based artist Kameelah Janan Rasheed, engages with a multiplicity of Muslim experiences in Brooklyn. Eleven large-scale prints by Rasheed are placed in conversation with audio narratives from oral histories drawn from BHS’s recent Muslims in Brooklyn project. The result is an immersive encounter with art and sound that challenges narrow conceptions of Muslim identity and history.

Muslims in Brooklyn is a public arts and history project which amplifies the stories of Brooklyn’s diverse Muslim communities. For well over a century, Muslims have lived, worked, and prayed in Brooklyn, making it a major center of Muslim life for New York City and the nation. As such, the histories and experiences of Brooklyn’s Muslim communities hold great resonance for national conversations on religious diversity and pluralism.
