The fourth annual Camp Doughboy World War I History Weekend comes to Governors Island National Monument on September 14 and 15. Each day will bring living history, reenactors, authors, experts, vintage vehicles, and animals. This is the largest free public WWI exhibition in the United States. Reenactors representing the Allies and Central Powers — as well as civilians in Edwardian-era attire — are invited living history participants. The centennial of the service members returning to Governors Island is in 2019 and this group of volunteer reenactors will share the story of WWI participants. See living history, weapons and equipment displays, and vintage vehicles.

All events are free, open to the public, and run 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday and 9:00 AM to 3:00 PMon Sunday on the Parade Ground. The events are sponsored by the U.S. WWI Centennial Commission, the WWI Centennial Committee for NYC, and the National Park Service.

Learn about Hudson River Park’s wildlife by joining knowledgeable naturalists on guided nature walks throughout the summer along the Park’s esplanade.

Each nature walk is unique and offers a one-of-a-kind treasure hunt-like experience. Park Naturalists will meet participants at the Christopher Street Fountain, just north of Pier 40 at 9 a.m. sharp. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Loud noises and barking tend to startle wildlife and reduce viewing opportunities - please be considerate and leave your dog at home.

City Parks Foundation is thrilled to announce the 2019 season of Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage, New York City’s largest free outdoor performing arts festival, bringing nearly 100 free and benefit shows to Central Park and 17 neighborhood parks throughout the five boroughs. This year’s festival will showcase 200 renowned artists and rising stars from around the world to local neighborhood parks, presenting distinctly New York genres -- salsa, jazz, and hip-hop -- alongside indie, reggae, Afrobeat, soul, contemporary dance, and much more.

Capital One is the festival’s new multi-year title sponsor (Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage) and its official bank and credit card. A presenting sponsor since 2015, Capital One has helped SummerStage bring more than 500 artists to 800,000 audience members in parks all around New York City. The Family Day concert will be held in Central Park on July 14 at 3:30pm.

Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company will present "No Brainer or the Solution to Parasites," a rip-roaring musical which portrays our road to national madness as a bad trip to Hades. Free performances will tour parks, playgrounds and closed-off streets throughout the five boroughs through September 15. Book, lyrics and direction are by Crystal Field; the musical score is composed and arranged by Joseph Vernon Banks. TNC's free street theater productions are delightfully suited for family audiences, since complex social issues are often presented through children's allegories, with children and neighborhood people as the heroes.

The Hester Street Fair an outdoor community market located on the Lower East Side, specializing in handmade goods, creative products, and artisanal food.

HSF is a launching pad for small, independent businesses and artists. Hundreds of vendors rotate over 60 spots every Saturday and Sunday to create one of the most dynamic outdoor events in New York City. Located at the intersection of Hester and Essex Streets, the Fair is open from 11am to 6pm every Saturday and some Sundays through October of 2019.

New York Virtual Volcano Observatory brings the experience of exploring a volcano to Governors Island. Join volcanologists from CUNY and other NYC institutions to discover the complex life of magmas and volcanos – and the rich volcanic history of the New York region – through virtual reality experiences, a volcano sound gallery, guest speakers and kid-friendly activities.

Hands-on Geology
Touch volcanic rock (lava from New Jersey!) and examine rock crystals under a microscope.

Sonic Experience
Listen to the sound of the volcano, through recordings of actual eruptions and the music it inspired.

Virtual Reality
Explore volcanoes from across the world and close to home through virtual reality interactions.

Stargazing - The High Line

Head to the High Line each Tuesday night for a romantic walk along the park and a chance to take a closer look at the stars. Peer through high-powered telescopes provided by the knowledgeable members of the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York to see rare celestial sights.

Stargazing at the High Line takes place every Tuesday, beginning at dusk, between Tuesday, April 2, and Tuesday, October 29.
