Mola Mola - Long Island Children's Museum

The mola is a colorful textile art form that originated in Panama and Colombia. Molas tell the stories of the indigenous Kuna people. They are made by layering pieces of fabric on and cutting out shapes through individual layers; creating beautiful, colorful patterns! Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney: Sculpture Exhibition - Planting Fields Arboretum

The artist is best known as the founder of New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art, yet she had a significant career as a sculptor, exhibiting throughout the United States and Europe.  We will feature over thirty sculptures and drawings.  This is the first exhibition of Whitney’s art since her death in 1942.  William R. Coe knew Mrs. Whitney and was involved in the commission of the larger than life equestrian sculpture of Buffalo Bill in Cody, Wyoming.

The Conservancy will host “Just Moms” – a weekly informational discussion group for parents of newborns to 12 months, created and facilitated by licensed therapists Amy L. Kates and Dr. Stacey G. Kaufman – who are also experienced moms. Inside the historic mansions, participants can meet fellow parents and share concerns during eight one-hour sessions on Wednesdays at 11 am on September 26 through November 14, 2018. According to the co-creators, “This program is designed to make moms more comfortable in their parenting roles and, at the same time, allow them the opportunity to meet other moms in their community.” Although the program is geared towards mothers who are looking to connect with other moms in the area, fathers are welcome to join. Dr. Stacey G. Kaufman earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from The University of Pennsylvania and her Master’s Degree and Doctorate in Psychology from Yeshiva University. Nothing in art is more powerful than color. From Matisse to Mark Rothko and Frank Stella, and onward to the huge Color Field canvases and pulsing neon sculptures of today, color as a means of expression is the keynote for this wildly exuberant show. Potent even to the point of being considered dangerous, it is the most exciting element of art, the strongest tool in the toolbox. “Color, above all, is a means of liberation,” Matisse declared. 

The full range of color’s magic is on display in this exuberant show of over 100 works from the nineteenth century to this moment’s hottest talents. The roll call is a hit parade of art history’s most exciting names: Kandinsky, Motherwell, Warhol, Wolf Kahn, James Nares, Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Mitchell, David Hockney, and many more. It all begins with a monumental painting by Titian, considered the original champion of color in art, in a dramatic installation.
