Fleur de Lis Academy, a facility that offers ballet and etiquette classes, now offers two different classes to help children build self-esteem: Under the Mustache and yoga.

Beginning March 2, Fleur de Lis Academy will preview k2play@yoga, a playful class that introduces yoga to a younger audience. The class, for ages 3-12, is just one of many dance and manners programs being introduced by the academy.

“I’m over and over again hearing in my studio about anxiety in kids,” says Michelle Sperry, founder and director of Fleur de Lis Academy. The program combines fun dance and yoga techniques to “to give children an outlet and a place to find peace and rest in a fun and playful way,” Sperry adds. During the class’s initial run, Fleur de Lis will offer 10 classes for the price of eight.

Another program starting in March is Under the Mustache, a manners class aimed at raising self-esteem in young girls.

Over the course of two weeks, children in first through ninth grades will use fun games, and discussions to help them highlight and appreciate their overall beauty. Their progress will be showcased in a fashion show on the final night, when they walk the catwalk in outfits (provided by Krik-it, a local clothing store) and mustache masks they created, which they’ll remove at the end of the show in a final gesture that represents them stepping away from their insecurities.

The Fleur de Lis Academy is the only American Academy of Ballet Affiliate in Fairfield County.
