Take advantage of Long Island Live Steamers’ Public Run Days on July 8 and July 29, when you can hop aboard a miniature electric, diesel, or steam train as it chugs along eight acres of tracks at Southaven County Park in Brookhaven.

Pint-Sized Farmers
It’s never too early to teach your children about where their food comes from. In Tots Cooking! at Garden of Eve Farm in Riverhead, kids ages 2-6 learn the entire process of growing, harvesting, and preparing food. First they take a tour of the farm to see what’s growing and to gather ingredients. Then they head back to the Farm Market to turn those ingredients into a vegetarian dish. Children work their fine motor skills and are exposed to new tastes as they whip up and devour delicious, healthy meals. Wednesdays, July 11 through Aug. 29.

Daring Dora
In Dora’s Pirate Adventure, showing at the Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts, the audience is invited to join the fun as Dora and her friends visit Treasure Island to confront the Pirate Piggies. Weekends, July 14 through Aug. 12.

Silly Science
There’s no reason science can’t be fun. In Kidfest #2: The Mr. Molecule Science Show at Guild Hall in East Hampton, Mr. Molecule puts on a whimsical show using puppets, magic, and audience participation to sneak in a comprehensive lesson about core curriculum science principles.

Teachers Rock
Do you ever wonder what teachers do over the summer? Three elementary-school teachers from Seattle—Drew Holloway, Jack Forman, and Daron Henry (pictured, left to right)—turn into musicians and tour with their band, Recess Monkey. The trio’s “undeniably hip, yet kid-accessible” music rocks the nearby Long Island Children’s Museum month with songs that throw jokes, puns, and shenanigans into the mix. They’ll perform their greatest hits along with songs from their new CD, In Tents.

Uncovering the Past
Children ages 5-12 learn what it’s like to be a paleontologist during Fossilfest at the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum. They touch fossils from prehistoric oceans, learn what rocks tell us about the past, and make their own fossils to take home. RSVP required.
