tessa wehrmanFoot Locker Five Borough Challenge

Course starts in Staten Island and ends in Central Park
Nov. 3

Marathon runners have many different motivations for making the 26.2-mile commitment. For many, the decision to run a marathon emerges from the need to overcome a challenge—one that may have little or nothing to do with running. This year, five runners—one from each of the five boroughs of NYC—will run the ING New York City Marathon as part of the Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge.  Each has faced a significant challenge that running has helped them to overcome. These five individuals will run the first 13.1 miles of the marathon together and then race to the finish. The winner receives a Tiffany trophy and bragging rights for having the fastest borough. These athletes were selected to run in 2012, but in the wake of the cancellation of last year’s marathon, they are all returning to run this year. Representing Queens is Tessa Wehrman (pictured), 29, a breast cancer survivor who has lived in Queens for the past six years. In speaking about her challenge, Wehrman, who recently celebrated her two-year “cancerversary,” said, “I decided that cancer was just a different type of marathon, and I was going to take it one mile at a time.”

gingerbread laneGingerbread Lane

New York Hall of Science, Corona
Nov. 17 – Jan. 12

Remember in the Wizard of Oz, how Dorothy and her friends took off on an adventure down the Yellow Brick Road? Well, another marvelous spectacle awaits families at Chef Jon Lovitch’s Gingerbread Lane, a grand village of more than 150 homemade, candy-adorned gingerbread houses weighing in at more than 1.5 tons. This year’s Gingerbread Lane will be competing for a Guinness World Record for largest gingerbread exhibit. New this year is Ribbon Candy Ridge and a “behind-the-scenes” window that gives visitors a peek into the makings of the village. This awesomely creative exhibit—not to mention the whiff of real gingerbread—might have made Dorothy consider another route.
