Academic Enrichment Center in Flushing to Offer Pre-K Course

Kent Prep in Flushing will be offering a pre-K enrichment class in early 2017.

Coming this spring, Kent Prep in Flushing will offer a new 16-week course for pre-kindergarteners to prepare them for school beyond the Gifted and Talented Test.

The aim of the course will be to acclimate kids to the kindergarten curriculum, in addition to preparing them to excel on the G&T Test. They will be taught a range of subjects, from phonics to simple math.

Groups will be comprised of no more than seven children, and each child is encouraged to work and learn at his or her own pace and ability. For example, a child who can already read will be learning at a different pace than a child who is still learning to sound words out.

This philosophy is referred to as “curriculum compacting,” and ensures each child gets the attention he or she need.

“Curriculum compacting means that our curriculum department will go about providing material that will help the child improve at their own pace,” said Kent Prep manager Sharon Kim. “We want to challenge the students by not going over things that they have already mastered.”

In addition to the pre-K program, Kent Prep offers enrichment courses and test prep for students through the 12th grade. It also offers counselors for nearly every grade level to meet students’ individual academic advising needs.
