Long Island Nets Launch Dance Team for Kids

Long Island Nets Launch Dance Team for Kids

The Long Island Nets, the NBA Development League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets, are launching a kids dance team.

The dance team will perform at certain Long Island Nets home games at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The dancers will also represent the professional basketball team during media events and around the community, according to a recent press release by the Long Island Nets.

The Long Island Nets Kids dance team will be lead by choreographer and instructor Christy R. Tolbert, who was named as head coach. Tolbert is a Long Island native who graduated from Long Island High School for Performing Arts (BOCES) and trained at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Broadway Dance Center.

Open auditions for the 2017-18 season will be held on Saturday, June 24 at 11am at LIU Post Pratt Recreation Center at 720 Northern Blvd. in Brookville. Registration begins at 10am.

Here are the audition requirements for the Long Island Nets Kids dance team:

  • Boys and girls ages 6-13 with at least two years of dance training.
  • Dancers will be asked to demonstrate their ability to learn and perform choreography.
  • Tumbling and break-dancing skills are a plus, but not required.
  • Participants should wear dance attire and non-marking sneakers or dance shoes.
  • One parent or legal guardian must be present at registration to sign a participation waiver.
  • Only those auditioning will be allowed into the gymnasium.
  • Finalists may be kept until 9:30pm.

Dancers who are selected for the Long Island Nets Kids dance team must be available to attend rehearsals on Long Island once a week as well as select home games at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, states the press release.

If you want to get a leg up on the action, attend an audition workshop. The audition workshops for the Long Island Nets Kids dance team will be held on Saturday, June 17 from 11am-1pm and on Wednesday, June 21 from 6:30-8:30pm at LIU Post Pratt Recreation Center.

The workshops are open to dancers ages 6-13; participants will learn Long Island Nets Kids routines similar to what will be performed on court. Each session is $50, and dancers can register here.
