Mathnasium of Scarsdale, a math-only learning center for students in pre-K to 12th grade, is opening its center in April. It offers math tutoring, homework help, and test prep. SAT prep classes for high school students will begin in the fall.

Prior to taking classes, there is an extensive, comprehensive assessment to determine each child’s understanding of math. Mathnasium then creates an individual learning plan that caters to the child’s needs.

The program recommends that children come into the center at least twice a week for no less than an hour to work on the Mathnasium curriculum. The sessions use a group setting so children can come in when it’s most convenient for them. “We feel that math is a language…something that needs to be practiced consistently over time,” says Shane Bland, the Scarsdale center director. “We teach math in a way that makes sense to them.”

Summer programs include the First Steps program for pre-K through first grade students that will function as a one-hour drop-off class incorporating hands-on materials, songs, games, and activities to promote a fun learning environment and The Power Math Workout, for second through 12th grades, designed so students don’t fall behind once they go back to school.
