MUSE Academy to Open in Fort Greene

MUSE Academy is a new, independent school in Brooklyn that integrates the arts and performance into its curriculum. The academy is scheduled to open in Fort Greene in September 2018 for children in pre-K to second grades.

“The curriculum is an inquiry-based learning model that is going to be highly integrated between a core curriculum of academics and an intense submersion in the arts, including music, dance, and visual arts,” says Deborah Bradley-Kramer, Ph.D., director of music and performance.

The arts curriculum will include daily intense instruction, including music theory and music composition, string ensemble, private instruction, recorder and woodwind ensemble, and improvisation. The core curriculum will include instruction in math, science, humanities, languages, and letters and speech.

“Some of the unique aspects of this school are the number of hours that students will spend in music every week, the fact that we have composition as a key component, and the fact that we have this stellar faculty that is involved in music and dance,” Bradley-Kramer says.

The curriculum is created by and will be taught by teachers from music and arts institutions in New York City including American Ballet Theatre, Columbia University, and Juilliard.

In addition to the daily curriculum, many after-school enrichment classes will be offered as well as an opportunity to be part of a choir. “The choir will form a real backbone in a lot of what we do, and we have an extraordinary theater because we are in the Brooklyn Music School facilities, where we will have access to a 300-seat theater for productions and concerts throughout the year,” Bradley-Kramer says.

Parents are welcome to join an information session to ask questions, talk to teachers, and to see the facilities. The academy has rolling enrollment and intends to add an additional grade each year.
