Sleep related problems in children—sleep apnea, night terrors, and sleep deprivation among others—are the most common issues seen by pediatricians. Many of these sleep problems can be successfully treated if identified early, and the new Weill Cornell Pediatric Sleep Center, which focuses on evaluating and treating a range of sleep problems in children and adolescents of all ages, can help.

The center is staffed by a team of pediatricians and pediatric specialists in the areas of sleep, pulmonology, otolaryngology, neurology, and psychology who address a range of issues including teaching parents techniques to help babies sleep during the night to sleep apnea and insomnia in older children.

Once the child is evaluated in the sleep lab, the team of specialists creates an individualized sleep plan, which may include devices that support breathing during sleep, medications, surgery, or behavioral therapy.

“Many behavioral problems we see in children are the result of sleep problems,” says Haviva Veler, M.D., director of the new Weill Cornell Pediatric Sleep Center and a pediatrician at the Phyllis and David Komansky Center for Children’s Health at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. “Once you address sleep, these problems—be it moodiness or depression or even ADHD—may disappear.”

The Weill Cornell Pediatric Sleep Center, part of the NewYork-Presbyterian Phyllis and David Komansky Center for Children’s Health, is located at 425 E. 61st St. on the Upper East Side. For more information, call 646-962-3410 or visit nyp.org/komansky.
