Smithsonian Magazine Announces 14th Annual Museum Day This September

Participating museums nationwide will offer free admission on September 22 as a part of the annual celebration of boundless curiosity, also known as Museum Day

Smithsonian magazine has announced that Saturday, September 22 will be the 14th annual Museum Day, which is an initiative in which participating museums nationwide open their doors for free to those who download a Museum Day ticket. The event allows museums across the United States to emulate the spirit of the Washington D.C-based Smithsonian facilities, which offer free admission every day.

Museum day is not only an initiative to bring in visitors, but it is also a day to empower and advance the hopes and ambitions of the public, most notably school-aged children in underrepresented communities. The event is a representation of the national commitment to access, equity, and inclusion. This year, the theme is "Women Making History," honoring women in society who are trailblazers in the arts, sciences, innovation, and culture, while also inspiring others to be pioneers as well.

To help enforce this year's theme, Smithsonian is partnering with Microsoft to create an original mixed reality experience. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will host the marquee program with the exclusive HoloLens experience and launch event featuring a Q&A with an astronaut.

Museums in all 50 states have already signed up to participate in the 2018 Smithsonian Magazine's 2018 Museum Day. Over 1,300 museums are expected to participate.

Those wishing to attend and participate in Museum Day 2018 can visit the Smithsonian Museum Day website to learn more and to download a free ticket beginning August 15. Each ticket grants the holder and one guest free access to any participating museum on September 22. A list of participating museums, which will be continually updated as more museums sign up, can be found on the Smithsonian Museum Day website.
