The Kew-Forest School Welcomes First Female Head of School

The Kew-Forest School in Forest Hills welcomes Carla Jantos MacMullen, its first female head of school, as it approaches its centennial anniversary.

MacMullen has spent the past 30 years at Hopkins School in New Haven, CT, most recently as the dean of faculty. Her placement as the head of school for The Kew-Forest School will be effective July 1.

“I find myself reflecting daily on what drew me to The Kew-Forest School—the palpable warmth and purposeful activity in its buildings, eager and engaged students, dedicated teachers, administrators, and staff members, devoted parents, and loyal members of the board of trustees,“ MacMullen says.

MacMullen was selected to become the new head of school for The Kew-Forest School after a nationwide search. “The selection of head of school is one of the greatest responsibilities of trusteeship,” said Gregory L. Matalon, chair of the board of trustees, in a press release. “In our many rounds of interviews and conversations with Ms. MacMullen, we consistently saw a strong and thoughtful leader; a superior level of preparation and analysis; someone committed to our values of diversity and inclusion and consideration of the balance between independent school best practices and Kew-Forest’s specific needs—all while keeping students first.”

The Kew-Forest School is a coed college preparatory school for students in pre-K through 12th grade. The private school has more than 250 students hailing from 65 countries around the globe. It was established in 1918 and is approaching its centennial anniversary.

“Beyond the immediate community, I am also eager to connect with The Kew-Forest School alumni in order to understand the school’s history through their memories. I am honored to embark on leading The Kew-Forest School as it strives and advances toward a singular moment in its history, MacMullen says.
