Sweet Jenny’s Book Club, a new book club on the Upper East Side, gives elementary school-aged girls the opportunity to discuss literature on a deeper level than what daily school may provide.
For six to eight weeks, groups of no more than four girls meet once a week for two-hour club sessions. The first half of the club is spent baking (for example, madeleines or cupcakes); the second half is the tea party and discussion time, akin to “having tea at The Plaza.”
Sweet Jenny’s Book Club isn’t meant to replace daily school reading knowledge, but pick up where the classroom teacher leaves off. Jenny Richardson, creator and owner of the book club, as well as an elementary school teacher, explains the club brings a different way and different environment to understand reading.
“My focus is to inspire a love of reading and a love of books in the girls,” Richardson says. “It’s not really a tutoring or remedial service. It’s just really to get people to love reading.”
Over the course of the six to eight weeks, each group will read one book. The club is open to young girls ages 7-11 who are already comfortable reading. The book club is held at Richardson’s apartment on the Upper East Side. Pricing is available upon request.
