Nothing quite says autumn like festivals full of music, games, face-painting, and good food, and we list the ones happening this weekend in your area.

But before you stroll the fests, there's more fun to be had. Check out hands-on activities at The Highline, celebrate Grandparents Day with games and arts and crafts at the DiMenna Children's History Museum, catch blue claw crabs, or put on your detective hat for a family scavenger hunt in Queens, at the Tenafly Nature Center, or Westchester.

Duck RaceThen, test your skills kayaking before it closes for the season, and also savor what may be the last of the warm weather with an outdoor butterfly exploration. Plus touch exotic snakes from around the world, or take a tour of a lighthouse before enjoying a hayride, bouncy rides, clowns, and taking your chances on a high-stakes duck race for a good cause at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck.

Music for KidsCelebrate the season with the year's Honey Weekend at Wave Hill, and learn all about harvesting goods from gardens and hives. Next get pumped up to dance and sing at the Hip Top Music Fest, or rock out to the ABC's with Moey's Music Party. Also discover Maisy's Band and play with instruments where author Lucy Cousins will be signing books.

Festivals: In NYC head to the Back-to-School Festival for inflatable rides; or the Fresh Pond Road Street Festival for music, games, face-painting, and more. Dance Under the Stars; enjoy artist-led activities at a Block Party; discover the wonders of science at the Discovery Day Street Fair
, or enjoy kiddie rides at the Renaissance Festival.

In Westchester, play colonial games at Family Fun day; or ride a 30-foot slide at the Cortlandt Train Station; enjoy five stages of live music at Noon to Dusk; check out the 16th annual Beekman Avenue street fair; and see an outdoor art show with face-painting and coloring-book activities.

Oyster Fest!In Long Island, enjoy the largest and oldest Italian feast; help a good cause at the Merrick Fall Fest; hop on amusement rides, get up close with animals at the petting zoo at East Northport Festival; celebrate the culture of Spain, West Africa, and Brazil through dance and music at Fall Festival.

Elsewhere in Fairfield, check out the 35th Oyster Festival for the magical seaport circus and Pirates Coast Adventure, or enjoy the season's fruit in a cup of cider at the Apple Festival
