Where to Celebrate Father's Day in New York City


UPDATED May 2017: Father's Day is on June 18 this year—and what better way to honor dad than by celebrating Father's Day at one of New York City's museums, parks, or baseball fields? We've rounded up the best Father's Day activities in Manhattan.

FREE Big City Fishing
WHEN: Sundays, June 4-Oct. 15, 11am
WHERE: Hudson River Park, Pier 25, 225 West St., Tribeca
AGES: Young elementary, Tween, Teen, Adult
WHAT: Each summer, Hudson River Park offers Big City Fishing, a free program, to those as young as five who are eager to learn both how to fish and about the Hudson River environment. Rods, reels, bait and instruction is provided. Beyond teaching fishing, the program also provides participants with a first-hand opportunity to learn about river ecology and the many fish species that can be found in the river.

Gateway Storytime at the AMNH
WHEN: Select dates through June 19, 10:15am and 11:15am
WHERE: American Museum of Natural History: Discovery Room, Central Park West and 79th Street, Upper West Side
AGES: Story hour for ages 2-5
WHAT: Space is limited and tickets are distributed at the Discovery Room on a first-come, first-served basis for sessions at 10:15am and 11:15am. All visitors must have general admission tickets to obtain Gateway Storytime passes.

FREE The Great Randall's Island Treasure Hunt
WHEN: Saturday, June 10, 10am-2pm
WHERE: Randall's Island Park, next to the Urban Farm, Field 62-63, Randall's Island 
AGES: Young elementary and older
WHAT: Have an adventure on Randall's Island as you search for treasure. Learn to use a map and compass in this event in partnership with Hudson Valley Orienteering. It includes two orienteering courses—one for adults and one for children. There will also be arts and crafts, as well as light refreshments provided.

Big Apple Barbecue Block Party
WHEN: June 10-11, Saturday-Sunday, 11am-6pm
WHERE: Madison Square Park, Madison Avenue and 23rd Street, Madison Square Park
WHAT: The biggest food festival dedicated to all things BBQ returns to Madison Square Park. Founded in 2002 by Danny Meyer, Chef Kenny Callaghan, and Mark Maynard-Parisi, the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party exists to bring America’s most destination-worthy barbecue to the heart of New York City. Featuring the best of U.S. pitmasters and chefs. There will also be free music to enjoy.

FREE 39th Annual Museum Mile Festival
WHEN: Tuesday, June 13, 6-9pm
WHERE: Museum Mile, Fifth Avenue between 82nd and 105th streets, Upper East Side 
WHAT: Don't miss the 39th annual Museum Mile Festival, an open house stretching from 105th Street all the way down Fifth Avenue to 82nd Street. Attendees can walk the Mile between 82nd and 105th Streets while visiting seven of New York City's finest cultural institutions, which will be open free to the public throughout the evening. Several of the participating museums will offer outdoor art activities for children and entertainment, both inside the museums and on the streets.

FREE Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Two Sigma: 'Eschering Around' with Jürgen Richter Gerbert

WHERE: National Museum of Mathematics, 11 E. 26th St., Murray Hill
WHAT: A monthly event where you can have fun at MoMath for free. Family Fridays are designed to bring families together to enjoy a diverse array of engaging mathematical activities, promoting interest and enthusiasm among kids and adults alike. The activities are designed so that all attendees, regardless of age, can participate on an equal footing.

FREE Adventures NYC

WHERE: Central Park - Naumburg Bandshell, Mid-Park at 72nd Street, Central Park 
WHAT: You don't have to leave the city to get adventurous this summer. Get ready to hike, bike, climb, and paddle at this event that celebrates the great outdoors. Full lineup TBA. A good Father's Day weekend activity. Activities will include zip lining, rock climbing, surfing using VR, and outdoor survival training. Expect crowds and lines so arrive early.

FREE Discovery Walks for Families: Living Laboratory

WHAT: Guided walk for families. Venture into the Hallett Nature Sanctuary, and investigate the design of this living laboratory. Discover what plants and animals call this secluded Park woodland their home. Registration required.

FREE Egg Rolls, Egg Creams, and Empanadas Festival
WHEN: Sunday, June 18, 12-4pm
WHERE: Eldridge Street Synagogue, 12 Eldridge St., Lower East Side
WHAT: This annual block party celebrates Jewish, Chinese and Puerto Rican culture. From klezmer and Peking opera, to bomba and plena music. Plus kosher egg rolls, egg creams, empanadas, and other tasty traditional foods.

FREE Freshwater Fishing

FREE NYC Kids Fest

WHAT: Uptown culture festival featuring performances and activities. This year's lineup includes the Galli Theater, Peruvian Scissor Dancers, NY Arabic Orchestra, Classical Theater of Harlem, face painting, and Zumba with professional dancer Karen Arceneau.

Summer Garden Concert

WHAT: Listen to this child-friendly live music while relaxing in the garden. Toma Iliev, a graduate of the Juilliard School, will enchant with a historically informed performance on Baroque and classical violin. FREE Swedish Midsummer Festival
WHEN: Wednesday, June 21, 5-8pm
WHERE: Wagner Park, Battery Place, Battery Park City
WHAT: Celebrate Midsummer, one of Sweden's most important days of the year, at this festival. At this unique celebration, adults and children come together to picnic in the grass, decorate the midsummer pole, make flower wreaths, play traditional games and dance to authentic fiddle music.

WHAT: Celebrate midsummer day with a festival of 1,000 plus free concerts in public spaces throughout the five boroughs, on the longest day of the year.
